On this day in 1944, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and H.R.H The Princess Elizabeth visited the Orb Works here in Newport. By all accounts it was a grand occasion with the Home Guard giving them a guard of honour in front of the gates that are now across the road opposite Robert Price. A specially cut entrance was made for them and they were given a tour of the Works. Souvenir of Visit booklets were handed out to people that came and inside were some pictures of the Royal Family’s tour. While here, they also unveiled a plaque. Lysaght Institute has inherited this plaque from the Orb Works. The plaque is currently undergoing restoration and will be displayed proudly in our building for all to see.

Good morning friends. This morning we are going to share with you the minutes from a Whitley Committee Meeting held on 6th January 1919 and shows what matters were discussed. In attendance was the founder of the Newport Works, Mr William Royse Lysaght himself along with other members. Are there any names on the committee that you recognise? Let us take you on a walk down memory lane. This is one of the earliest pictures we have of the Orb Works and of the people that worked here. We don't have any names of the men in this photo sadly. The chap with his bowler and pocket watch looks rather dapper though! The volunteers of Friends Of Lysaght have been hard at work.

Our volunteers from Friends of Lysaght have been busy for the last couple of weeks. They have secured some gardening supplies from Natural Resources Wales and have been hard at work. Last year, we managed to get the cenotaph from the steelworks brought to Lysaght to stand pride of place. The team from F.O.L have been busy planting poppy seeds in the wild meadow around the cenotaph. These poppies will not only attract a wide range of pollinators and insects into the area but will also create a sea of red standing in remembrance of all the brave souls that paid the ultimate sacrifice. Friends of Lysaght is a voluntary group run by local residents who want to see Lysaght remain an active part of the community. If you would like to get involved, call the office on 01633 284911

Our friends over at Newport Transporter Bridge have been successful in their bid for funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. They have secured £8.75 million pounds for a new visitor centre and refurbishment of the iconic bridge that has become a symbol of Newport. But did you know that Lysaght Institute and the Transporter Bridge are linked? The bridge was built at the turn of the 20th Century. It was built in an effort to persuade John Lysaght to build his iron works at Pill Farm on the eastern side of the Usk. Many of its workers walked from Wolverhampton and settled on the eastern side of the river bank. Without this bridge, it would of meant that John Lysaght’s employees would have had to take a four mile detour along Castle bridge and 28 pubs along the way! We hope these two iconic structures of Newport continue to delight for many more years to come. This is Desmond, a 0-4-0 class steam locomotive. Avonside Locomotive Company built it in 1904. It was named after a member of the Lysaght family and was in use at Newport's Orb Steelworks up until 1973. It is now owned by Llanelli Heritage Railway who have secured funding to turn it once again into a fully operational steam engine 🚂

ITS CHRISTMAS!
We want to add the sparkle back into 2020! Why not join in with your street and raise the spirit of Christmas. Take a video of your street lights and enter it here [email protected].
We will create a virtual tour of Newport for all to enjoy the lights in the warm.
The winning street, close, cul-der-sac will be announced and presented with a plaque. In 2021 we will run the competition again to see if a new street will be crowned and take the plaque.
