Part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The Intellectual Property Office became an operating name of The Patent Office on 2 April 2007. The Patent Office was set up in 1852 to act as the United Kingdom’s sole office for the granting of patents, although the origins of the patent system stretch back at least a further 400 years. The Designs Registry was set up in 1839 to protect industrial designs and its responsibilities transferred to The Patent Office in 1875. The IPO has launched a call for evidence on a proposed FRAND Opinion Service, a voluntary, independent service that could help parties in Standard Essential Patent (SEP) licensing negotiations understand how a licensing offer aligns with FRAND principles at an earlier stage.

No decision has been made on the service. This is an opportunity to understand the proposal and help shape its future. The call for evidence closes on 15 December.

To support this, we'll be hosting a live online session on Tuesday 27 October, covering:

→ the government's response to the SEPs consultation and what happens next
→ the proposed FRAND Opinion Service and how to contribute to the call for evidence
→ live Q&A on both topics

🐻🍯 Time for a little smackerel of something to celebrate!🎈🎂

Winnie-the-Pooh turns 100 this week! 🥳

Like so many of us, I grew up with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and friends, with lots of cosy memories of playing Poohsticks whenever we found the right sort of bridge.

And after all that birthday excitement, Pooh has another big adventure just around the corner… 👀🍯

From 1 January 2027, A. A. Milne’s original Winnie-the-Pooh stories will enter the public domain in the UK. But, as is often the way with intellectual property, there’s a little more to the story.

For World Book Day last year, we took a wander through the Hundred Acre Wood to explore the IP behind Pooh, from copyright and illustrations to licensing and trade marks. 📚🐻

With 100 candles on the cake and a new chapter almost here, it feels like the perfect time to revisit it.
