A powerful reminder of what our lifeboat crews can be called upon to do.

This episode of Saving Lives at Sea features our Newquay crew responding to a serious casualty following a 30-foot jump while coasteering.

From launching at short notice to working alongside a second lifeboat and air ambulance crew, it shows the skill, teamwork and dedication of our volunteers when it matters most.

Newquay lifeboat volunteers were paged at 5:00pm on Thursday 3rd September and tasked to assist a small sailing dinghy located in Newquay Bay which had lost its rudder.

The crew responded and promptly launched the charity’s Atlantic 85 B Class lifeboat to assist.

The lifeboat rendezvoused with the casualty vessel. Before launching, the crew had collected a replacement rudder from Newquay Harbour, which was taken out to the vessel. Once alongside, the crew assisted the sailors in fitting the new rudder.

The sailing dinghy was then able to make its own way back to Newquay Harbour under its own steam, escorted by the lifeboat.

Once safely back at the station, the crew recovered and prepared the lifeboat for its next launch.

A huge thank you to RNLI Lifeguards Newquay , who helped raised the alarm and were able to rendezvous with the casualty vessel to check on the occupants’ welfare before the lifeboat was launched.

🎉 Congratulations MAC! 🎉

A huge congratulations to Maciek Więcław, also known as MAC, on successfully passing out as Shore Crew with Newquay RNLI!

Becoming a qualified member of the Shore Crew takes a lot of hard work, training, dedication and commitment, and MAC has put in plenty of all four to reach this point.

Pictured with MAC is Richie Law, who assessed and passed him out — a fantastic achievement and one that is thoroughly deserved.

We’re looking forward to seeing you continue to develop your skills and play your part in keeping our waters and coastline safe.

What a night! Our lifeboat crews were called out in the late hours of Saturday evening for a search lasting into the early hours of Sunday morning. After finally returning home, crews were paged yet again, answering two more shouts and working through the night.

This included a low water net recovery, as shown in this footage, demonstrating the high skill and precision of our crew even in challenging conditions. Afterwards, our dedicated crew regrouped at Newquay Rowing Club-Cornwall for a well-earned coffee! More details of the shouts will follow. Thank you to our Newquay lifeboat crew and Newquay coastguard search & rescue team for their relentless efforts.

A huge thank you to Take a Chance on Us ABBA Tribute and everyone at Oceanside Hotel Newquay for an incredible five weeks of fundraising! 💙

We were delighted to receive £529.30 for Newquay RNLI, raised through the fantastic events and performances at Oceanside.

A special thank you to Take a Chance on Us for putting on such brilliant performances and supporting our lifesaving work throughout the fundraising. And of course, thank you to everyone who came along, enjoyed the events and generously contributed. 🙏

Your support really does make a difference and helps our volunteer lifeboat crews continue to be there for those who need us around our coast.

Newquay lifeboat volunteers were called out twice on Wednesday 19 August, responding to incidents involving a foil windsurfer off Towan Headland and five casualties in difficulty at North Fistral.

Foil windsurfer – Towan Headland:

Newquay lifeboat pagers were activated at 2:29pm and the charity’s D-Class inshore lifeboat was tasked to assist a foil windsurfer off Towan Headland.

The D Class was launched and made contact with the casulaty. After confirming they were safe and uninjured, the crew confirmed the casualty was confident they could make their own way back to shore.

The lifeboat monitored the casualty as they made their way towards safety before returning to Newquay Lifeboat Station.

Five casualties – North Fistral:

Later that afternoon, during a scheduled training session, the charity's D-Class lifeboat had just returned to shore and was being recovered by RNLI shore crew when the station was tasked to assist five casualties who were in difficulty in the water at Little Fistral beach.

With the D-Class already on the shore and the boat crew at the ready, the boat relaunched within just 60 seconds. The charity’s Atlantic 85 B-Class lifeboat was launched shortly afterwards as additional crew arrived, with both lifeboats proceeding to Little Fistral.

Four casualties were located and safely brought aboard the D-Class, with the Atlantic providing support. One casualty was helped ashore by members of the public and did not require assistance.

The four casualties were returned safely to shore, where they were assessed by Newquay coastguard search & rescue team and South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

Newquay lifeboat volunteers were paged at 7:07pm on Saturday 15th August and tasked to assist two swimmers who had found themselves in difficulty in a rip at Mawgan Porth.

The charity’s Atlantic 85 B Class lifeboat was launched within 14 minutes, with the D Class inshore lifeboat launched shortly afterwards. Both lifeboats proceeded to Mawgan Porth to assist.

On arrival, both casualties had been located after being assisted by a member of Mawgan Porth Surf Life Saving Club , who had moved the two out of the surf and further out to sea while awaiting the arrival of the lifeboats. This made it easier for our crew to safely reach and assist them.

The D Class was stood down and returned to Newquay harbour, while the Atlantic 85 brought both casualties safely onboard before also returning to harbour.

Both casualties were safely returned to Newquay Harbour, where they were assessed by South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

The lifeboats were recovered and returned to the boathouse, ready for service.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a whole week since Newquay Lifeboat Day and Boardmasters! We hope everyone has had a chance to recover from all the excitement! There are so many people and organisations to thank.

To start, we’d like to start by saying a huge thank you to Newquay Activity Centre for this amazing footage that captured the atmosphere and action so brilliantly!

From the parade led by Newquay Samba Band , with local legend Lewis Timson towing one of our D Class lifeboats, to the opening by Deputy Mayor Cllr Sarah Thomson, there was plenty to enjoy.

The crowds were treated to fantastic demonstrations from Padstow Lifeboat and RNLI Lifeguards Newquay, while Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service brought along their vehicles and rescue equipment.

We were also incredibly proud to see one of Newquay RNLI's volunteers, Janet Kearton presented with her 20-year service medal by Lifeboat Management Group Chair Mark Killingback, recognising two decades of dedication as our Shop Manager and Treasurer.

And, of course, who could forget the Walker Cup Gig Race? After a closely fought contest between the Lifeboat crew and Newquay Rowing Club-Cornwall, our crew took the win! 🏆

Ian Pengelly, our Lifeboat Operations Manager, summed it up perfectly, describing it as “another great and successful lifeboat day” and thanking everyone who came along to support Newquay RNLI.

Newquay RNLI is sad to learn of the death of former Honorary Secretary of Newquay Lifeboat Station, Michael Morris, at the age of ninety-eight.

Mike, along with his extended family, came to Newquay as an evacuee during the second world war and made it his home. He became involved with the fishing community at the harbour running the well-known boats Freeman and Juliana. Mike and his son Paul later started their business, Pre Veg, providing prepared vegetables to many hotels and restaurants in the area and employing over 90 people in the Newquay and Plymouth areas.

His interest in the sea led to him becoming a crew member of the newly reopened inshore lifeboat station in the 1960s and in 1975 became Honorary Secretary, being in overall charge of running the lifeboat station.

Mike and his wife, Pauline were popular figures around the town. Pauline was a founding member of the Newquay Ladies Lifeboat Guild and dedicated many years to supporting the station.
