🦔 Respect the rescue process 🦔
Recently, our team has been experiencing an increasing number of difficult phone calls, and we feel it’s important to explain why we ask the questions we do.
When you contact us about an injured, orphaned, or unwell hedgehog, we understand the situation can be stressful and upsetting. Our team work through a series of triage questions to assess the hedgehog’s condition and determine the most appropriate course of action as quickly as possible.
These questions are not for our convenience—they are essential in helping us provide the right advice and support. The guidance we give is tailored to each case and always based on what is best for the hedgehog. In some cases, admission to rescue may not be the best option.
Unfortunately, we are increasingly finding that our team is being interrupted, dismissed, or spoken to rudely while trying to help. This is very disheartening for the team and does nothing to help the hedgehog concerned.
Calling a rescue is an important first step, but it is only the first step. We are a charity, not an emergency service, and while we do everything we can to help, we cannot instantly collect every hedgehog or override the realities of time, distance, and resources. Our processes exist for a reason and are based on years of experience and a commitment to hedgehog welfare.
If you contact us for advice, please answer our questions and follow the guidance given. Working together gives the hedgehog the best chance of receiving the help it needs.
We’re probably preaching to the converted, as many of our followers already understand and support what we do. However, we’d be grateful if you could share this post to help others understand how wildlife rescue works and why cooperation during the triage process is so important.
Thank you to everyone who supports us and treats our team with kindness and respect 🫶
