Last week we hosted our Annual Formal Reception (AFR). The event is to give Station the opportunity to thank those individuals and organisations who enable our outputs for Defence. It is vital for us to acknowledge and strengthen relationships with a wide cross-section of those from our local Cornish community, and further afield, without whose support the smooth operation of the Station would be significantly diminished.

Guests ranging from local councillors and Mayors to landowners, schools, charities, and civil authorities came together for the event, which included a briefing from Station Commander, Wing Commander Gareth Elliott, on St Mawgan’s varied outputs over the last 12 months.

Personnel from our Survival Equipment Section and Armoury were on hand to talk through some of the equipment used on Station and the evening was wrapped up with a flag lowering ceremony accompanied by some excellent drill by the cadets of 781 Newquay Squadron, RAFAC.

We were deeply honoured to stand alongside fellow serving personnel, veterans, and veteran organisations this morning to commemorate the remarkable life of Alfred 'Barney' Barnett, who recently passed away at the incredible age of 104.

A highly accomplished rear gunner with Bomber Command who had multiple postings to RAF St Mawgan, Barney represented the very best of his generation. Coming together with the wider military community to celebrate his legacy and pay our final respects was a profound privilege.

Thank you for your service, Barney. Blue Skies.

Our new Station Commander, Wing Commander Elliott, has already spent his first few weeks out and about, getting to know the incredible personnel and communities that make Cornwall so special. It's certainly been a busy start.

Because he hasn't been able to get to every corner of the station just yet, he put together this quick video to introduce himself to the members of the team he's yet to meet and our followers.

We have a packed calendar ahead, so you’re sure to see much more of him soon—especially at the Royal Cornwall Show and the Children's Hospice South West Rainbow Run!

Last week, we welcomed staff and volunteers from Bodmin Keep: Cornwall's Army Museum to collect their Ferret Armoured Car after it had spent the winter with us.

While it was here, our engineering squadron carried out essential brake maintenance, and the Bodmin Keep team used our site for some driver familiarisation training before heading back in convoy.

It wasn't just about the vehicle, though! We took the opportunity to swap insights— from the Keep team giving our Survival Equipment Section (SES) a tour of the Ferret, our SES personnel showing them the vital kit we maintain on station and a rare opportunity to climb inside our Sea King gate guardian.

A brilliant opportunity to support the preservation of our shared history. Keep an eye out for the Ferret across Cornwall this summer!

RAF St Mawgan has been buzzing with youthful enthusiasm recently as Air Cadets from across the South West joined No 3 Air Experience Flight (3 AEF) for an unforgettable detachment.

It wasn’t just about getting airborne in the Tutors—as some lucky cadets were treated to some world-class aviation inspiration. During week 1 they shared the apron with the iconic Spitfire 90 Tour, connecting the cadets with the legendary heritage of the RAF. In week 2 they shared the runway with an RAF C-17 undertaking routine training, showing them the sheer scale of modern global operations.

From the agility of the Spitfire to the power of the Globemaster, these moments sparked a new level of ambition in our future flyers. A massive thanks to Cornwall Airport Newquay, Babcock engineering, all the pilots and the supporting staff for making this possible!

Happy 100th birthday to a true national treasure, Sir David Attenborough!

In honour of his incredible legacy, we’re sharing a little glimpse of the magic we monitor daily across our site. We’ve been keeping a close eye on this beautiful pair of Great Spotted Woodpeckers in our woodlands.

Based on their recent behaviour, we believe there are officially eggs in the nest. Witnessing these moments reminds us exactly why conservation matters so much.

What happens when you give veterans, school children and Service personnel paper, tape, and a flight goal? You get a serious paper aeroplane competition!

To wrap up our latest Airplay-led Intergenerational Project, RAF St Mawgan hosted a vibrant lunch to celebrate Aprils’ ‘Month of the Military Child’. While a "UFO" design made of crumpled paper stole the laughs, the real magic happened across the tables.

Military life often means frequent moves and long deployments, which can make it tough for children to maintain close bonds with extended family like grandparents. This project bridges that gap, allowing our young people to bond with an older generation which truly understands the military experience. Working with Airplay in schools, the children also take ownership by planning the event, from the activities to the menu (which meant plenty of pizza and ice cream!).

Initiated as an experimental project last year, we have had incredible support to make it even bigger for 2026. A massive thank you to Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club & the RAF St Mawgan Veterans’ Fund for the generous funding, the Airplay team and our People & Families Support office, our local schools and veterans for jumping in with such enthusiasm.

It was a day of drum rolls, friendly rivalry, some very diligent judging, and shared stories that proved the military community has no age limit.

One of the most exciting traditions for any new Station Commander is seeing their name added to the Command Board—a permanent piece of RAF St Mawgan’s history. But behind that gold lettering is a story of incredible local craftsmanship. For over 40 years, this task has been entrusted to just one man: David Dunkley.

David is a master Cornish craftsman and the director of Parc Signs based in St Austell. His precision and commitment to his craft are why he has been our go-to expert for four decades. It’s a privilege to see local skills continuing to shape the history of our station.

We were proud to join our neighbours at Cornwall Airport Newquay to welcome the iconic Supermarine Spitfire today as part of the Spitfire 90 Tour. It was a privilege to see this legendary aircraft once again grace the skies of the SW. We were also delighted to assist the airport in facilitating access for another world-famous figure, as BAFTA award‑winning actor Warwick Davis joined the team on the airfield.

The Spitfire’s arrival in Cornwall was a powerful reminder of the region’s long‑standing connection to UK aviation history, the enduring legacy of this remarkable aircraft, and the importance of continued collaboration between military heritage and civilian aviation partners across the region.
