Digging deep to deliver operational excellence

RAF St Mawgan welcomed personnel from 530 Specialist Team Royal Engineers (Materials) for Exercise MOLE ENDEAVOUR 26, conducting geotechnical investigations across six sites. The exercise gathered critical ground data that will help inform future estate development, reduce project risk and support more effective planning and investment decisions across the Defence estate. It also provided an opportunity to validate specialist skills in a realistic environment, demonstrating the team’s expertise, operational readiness and ability to support Defence infrastructure requirements both in the UK and worldwide.

The Station Commander and Station Warrant Officer popped over to Bodmin Keep: Cornwall's Army Museum earlier today, to check out the skills of some future aviators and engineers! Members of RAF St Mawgan’s Engineering & Logistics Squadron have been stepping away from their regular roles to deliver a series of STEM workshops at The Keep over the summer holidays. It was great to meet all the families who came along ready for lift off 🚀

It’s been an exciting week for the aviation enthusiasts among us on station, with the Cornwall Airport Newquay airfield delivering a bit of everything!

On Monday we got to enjoy the final day of flying for the FlyaSpitfire.com Spitfire and P51 Mustang after a week of operating passenger flights. Hearing those iconic engines as the soundtrack to our work day has been a real pleasure and we hope to see them back in Cornwall next year.

The tempo stayed high throughout the week with numerous routine training sorties from our RAF A400’s, alongside a quick visit from a Belgian Air Force A400M.

To top it all off, we hosted a pair of CH-47 Chinooks from No. 28 (AC) Squadron, RAF Benson, on exercise for a few days. While here, the crew invited cadets from the current Air Cadets summer camp to tour the aircraft on the pan, before taking a group of our Station personnel on a training sortie down the Cornish coast. It was a brilliant opportunity for those who hadn't worked with the Chinook force before—and fantastic to hear that distinctive sound in the local skies.

🌱Growing connections through nature! Last week, RAF St Mawgan Whole Force personnel and family members got together for a herb-planting session designed to promote wellbeing, encourage meaningful conversations and foster a stronger sense of community and belonging. Supported by VIVO Defence's Social Value scheme, Gavin Jones, Nurture Lanscapes and our own People & Families Support Team, participants from sections across the Station planted up baskets with thyme, chives, oregano and parsley to take home - prompting lots of chat about potential culinary uses! The session highlighted the positive impact that nature can have on mental health and wellness, whilst providing a simple, hands-on activity for all ages. 💚

Last week, we were delighted to welcome 12 local students to the station for our annual work experience placement!

The group got a real behind-the-scenes look at military life, tackling everything from:
• First Aid Skills with the RAF Regiment
• Hands-on Survival Equipment training
• Teamwork & Leadership challenges, plus the RAF Fitness Test and climbing wall
• RAF Careers briefings on the huge range of roles available

We also had another student join our Media & Communications team. She smashed her week—helping with creative planning, photo tasking, graphic design for upcoming events, and laying the groundwork for an exciting future project. Her week culminated with a photo shoot with her dog in our studio to practice some of her new skills with great results!

They were a brilliant, engaged group, and we hope they all found the week invaluable. We wish each of them the best of luck with their futures.

Last week we welcomed Air Commodore Reid, Head of Infrastructure for the Royal Air Force to the station.

His visit included touring one of our new accommodation blocks that is approaching completion and meeting personnel and industry partners involved in its delivery.

The Air Commodore also met with personnel to discuss opportunities and future projects to safeguard our ongoing contribution to UK Defence.

Recently Chief Technician Budziszewski attended the AOC 2 Group awards dinner to be presented with The Charitable Endeavour Award by Jonathan Evans from Plexsys. This award is presented annually to the individual or team that has delivered a demonstrable impact in the cause of charity.
Here is a snippet from his official award citation:

"Chief Technician Budziszewski has been recognised for outstanding voluntary service to the RAF Air Cadet Organisation and the wider community. Alongside a demanding full-time role, they delivered a major Air Cadet summer camp, providing young people from their local community and beyond with a unique insight into RAF life. Most notably, when their Air Cadet Squadron faced closure, they stepped forward to lead the unit, safeguarding a vital youth organisation and preserving opportunities for local children. Their dedication has delivered a lasting impact on both the local community and the next generation of the RAF family."

It was a busy week last week for our People & Families Support team!

The team hit the ground running on Sunday, hosting our annual Community Fun Day. It was fantastic to see so many of our personnel, families, and children enjoying a brilliant day packed with activities, great food, and drinks. A well deserved day of relaxation and fun for our personnel.

Then bright and early on Monday morning, we welcomed service children from St Columb Minor Academy for our latest intergenerational event. After fueling up on pastries and drinks, the children teamed up with station personnel for a STEM challenge. Working together, they used balloons and card to design and build their very own aircraft for competition.

These projects are absolutely vital. Not only do they spark creativity, but they also give our local service children a hands-on look at the station and a better understanding of the crucial roles their parents play every day.

A massive thank you to our families team and all the volunteers who gave up their time to make both events such a resounding success!

Always nice to see our friends from RAF Brize Norton down in Cornwall, especially when they bring ZZ177 with her new tail art to mark the 25th anniversary of the C-17 in RAF service! Taken last week during a routine training sortie, performing a series of touch-and-go's through the heat haze.

Recently, Station personnel, accompanied by their Chains of Command and family members, gathered for an Honours & Awards ceremony, presided over by Air Commodore Nick Huntley.

The event provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Whole Force personnel. The awards bestowed included RAF Commendations for both individuals and teams, Station Commander's Commendations, and long service awards for both Armed Forces and Civil Service personnel. The ceremony also featured the inaugural presentation of the Skoos an Para (Shield of the Team) station award, jointly presented to the Domestic Supply Flight and the Supply Control and Accounting Flight.

We were also delighted to formally present the W F MacNeece-Foster sword to Warrant Officer Stobbs. The sword is presented annually to the member of RAF St Mawgan who has consistently performed to an exceptional standard and made an outstanding contribution to both the Station and the reputation of the Armed Services. His dedication to professional excellence and continuous improvement has had a profound and lasting impact across RAF St Mawgan, making him a truly deserving recipient.
