Barn Owl Trust Conserving the wild Barn Owl & its environment. Barn Owl info, advice, rescue & rehab. Registered Charity No. 1201419

Founded in 1988, the Barn Owl Trust is a small national charity working very hard to conserve one of the most beautiful birds on Earth. Anyone who has ever watched a wild Barn Owl hunting at dusk has surely been touched by the experience. Sadly, these magical birds have become increasingly rare – and the reasons are all man-made. Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest si

tes, road mortality and rat poison, are the main factors to blame. Happily, there is a great deal that can be done to help wild Barn Owls, and the environment they depend on. Because they are a bird of prey, at the top of the food chain, looking after our Barn Owls means that many other small creatures and plants benefit as well, helping to create sustainable biodiversity. Barn Owl friendly land management and the provision of safe nestboxes are the two most important ways to encourage Barn Owls, but everyone can help by learning about Barn Owls and supporting the Barn Owl Trust!

🚗🦉Calling all car commuters!🦉🚗

Do you regularly drive through the UK countryside? We need your help!

Monitoring this summer has revealed many large broods, with many young Barn Owls fledging much earlier than usual. This means we’re expecting to see more birds out and about over the next few months.

Sadly, as low-flying birds, young Barn Owls navigating the landscape for the first time during their dispersal journeys are particularly vulnerable to road traffic collisions.

It’s not a nice thing to ask, but if you spot a dead Barn Owl on the road network, please:

Make a mental note of the location, using nearby landscape features.

On major roads, numbered marker posts can be particularly helpful.

If you regularly drive that route, consider slowing down a little and taking a second look next time you pass, just to double-check the species ID.

When you’re safely parked and stationary, report the sighting via our national survey website: barnowlsurvey.org.uk

Please drop a pin on the map as accurately as possible.

These sightings are incredibly valuable to our research. They help demonstrate the prevalence of this hazard and its impact on the species’ population.

In some cases, reports have even helped us make recommendations to National Highways and other agencies to introduce mitigation measures on stretches of road where fatalities are particularly common.

You can find more information, along with our previous research papers on the subject, here: https://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/hazards-solutions/barn-owls-major-roads/

On the positive side, you can also use the same survey site to record any Barn Owl sightings, dead or alive!

Small and full of character, the Little Owl is one of the most distinctive owls found in the U.K. With its bright yellow eyes and expressive face, it’s hard not to be charmed by this tiny member of the owl family. 💚

Little Owls are often active during daylight hours and can be found in farmland, orchards, parkland and open woodland edges. Although they may be small, they have plenty of personality!

Sadly, Little Owl numbers have declined in Britain, making it all the more important that we understand and protect the habitats they rely on.

🦉✨Time to spread their wings…

This lovely photo of young Barn Owls captures an exciting stage in their journey, as they begin to disperse, leaving the area where they were raised and setting out to find their new home range.

Dispersal can be a challenging time, with young Barn Owls facing many risks along the way, from busy roads and habitat loss to finding enough food in unfamiliar areas. Creating and protecting suitable spaces for wildlife can make a real difference🦉💚
