Old Exeter Inn

Old Exeter Inn The Old Exeter was established in 1130 and has been going for almost 900 years! Old Exeter was established in 1130 and has traded for almost 900 years.

We're one of the world's oldest inns. Sir Walter Raleigh was arrested here on July 19 1603 for treason and taken to the Tower of London. His cousin, Sir Francis Drake was also a regular. We're England's Historic Pie House serving our Home Made Pies and other comfort food every day. Private & Party bookings taken. With a maze of small rooms and corridors, you can enjoy our Bar & Snug, Confessional

& Parlour and the Otter Tap Room, our hideaway where you can pour your own pints and play traditional pub games! Outside is our stunning walled Apothecary Garden (with cider bar & pizzeria). We're in 'Britain's Best Real Heritage Pubs' guide, also the 'Good Beer Guide' for 24 years. Real ales served straight from the barrel. 12 Craft beers on tap and a remarkable spirits list. Excellent wine menu.

Happy International Dog Day

At England’s Historic Pie House, we believe history — and time spent relaxing — is always better shared, especially with your four-legged friends.

VIPs (Very Important Pooches) are always welcome here:
• A special dog beer barrel (fresh H₂O) waiting in the garden
• Treats at the bar for our furry companions
• Cosy corners and a secret garden perfect for wagging tails

Because life’s too short not to share pies, pints, and history with your best friend.

🌿 New Arrival: Thunderflower Gin Has Landed! 🍸⚡

There’s something enchanting about sipping a crisp, botanical gin in a secret walled garden… and we’ve just made that experience even more legendary.

We’re thrilled to welcome Thunderflower Gin to the Old Exeter Inn! Handcrafted right here in Devon, this small-batch spirit is inspired by an old local legend - tiny white ‘thunder flowers’ said to grow on cottage rooftops and wild Dartmoor stone, believed to ward off lightning and witchcraft. Handy traits for a gin, don’t you think?

Made with love by Anicca & Dom, every bottle is signed, numbered, and infused with wild Devon character. It’s the kind of drink that belongs in a place like ours: full of history, stories, and secrets.

Come and enjoy a Thunderflower & tonic in our garden - where the herbs grow wild and the legends come alive.

Wine of the Month at the Old Exeter Inn

This August, we’re pouring a taste of Portugal with two standout wines from Ai Galera. These bottles bring the oldest wine-producing region of Portugal, Tejo, to life with bold character and silky elegance.

Ai Galera ‘Poetico’ (Red)
Smooth, juicy and rich with plump cherry fruit and mellow tannins. A perfect match for white meats and soft cheese.

Ai Galera ‘Mistico’ (White)
Fresh, zesty and full of yellow fruit flavours. Think sunshine in a glass, ideal with salads, grilled fish or simply as an apéritif.

Come sip something a little special this month.

What’s pouring today at the Old Exeter Inn?

We’ve got a cracking lineup of beers and cider, from heritage brews to bold new favourites. Here’s what’s waiting at the bar for you:

HAWKSTONE
Created by Jeremy Clarkson’s team, this is a bold, crisp lager brewed with Cotswold-grown barley. Clean, punchy, and proud of it.

BLACK GATES STOUT (Bristol Beer Factory)
Smooth, rich, and full of roasted chocolate and coffee notes. A proper modern stout with depth and character.

TINY REBEL CLWB TROPICA
Like a fruit salad in a glass. This tropical IPA bursts with mango, pineapple, and passionfruit. Sunshine in a pint.

VAULT CITY BLOOD ORANGE RADLER
Zesty, juicy, and low in ABV—this blood orange beauty is a tart-meets-sweet thirst-quencher with a bit of a cheeky wink.

OTTER BLACK
A dark, malty ale with notes of chocolate, coffee, and a soft smooth finish. A comforting West Country classic.

THISTLY CROSS SCOTTISH CIDER
Slow-fermented for bold flavour, this cider is big on apple, lightly sparkling, and perfectly balanced. A Highland refreshment.

OLD EXETER’S 1603 BELGIAN PILSNER
Exclusive to us. Crisp, golden, and inspired by European brewing traditions—with a nod to Sir Walter Raleigh’s arrest here in 1603.

OTTER OPA (Otter Pale Ale)
A golden ale that’s light, floral, and a touch citrusy. A gentle, sessionable favourite from our local legends at Otter.

PRAHVA
A lighter, smoother pilsner from the makers of Staropramen. All the flavour, less of the heaviness. Very drinkable.

HOBGOBLIN
Rich ruby ale with notes of toffee, biscuit, and dried fruit. A mischief-maker of a beer with plenty of flavour.

EXMOOR GOLD
A golden ale that practically gleams in the glass. Refreshing, slightly sweet, and just the right amount of hoppy.

We were so busy enjoying Ashburton’s annual Bread Weighing & Ale Tasting ceremony yesterday that we completely forgot to mention… it was 422 years to the day since Sir Walter Raleigh made his rather dramatic exit from the Old Exeter Inn.

We suspect he took umbrage - he did seem to leave in something of a huff.

If you happen to spot him (time traveller? ghost tour? uncanny lookalike?), do let him know we’re terribly sorry - and there’s a pint waiting for him behind the bar.

We had such a fun afternoon this week with a brilliant crew filming for a brand new TV series coming to ITV in spring 2026! 🌟🎬

It’s set to shine a spotlight on our beautiful corner of Devon - bringing it to screens across the nation (and beyond, with online streaming too 👀).

A big well done to our fabulous staff who played their parts beautifully - turning out top-notch food and drink and even grabbing a little time on camera! 🌟👏

And a special shoutout to Annie, our wonderful gardener, who not only has the garden looking spectacular but also ended up giving gardening tips to the star of the show. We’re getting full-on Carol Klein vibes over here… 🌿📺😉

We wish we could tell you more… but our lips are sealed 🤐 until the big reveal. Watch this space!

✨ Starter cravings? Start as you mean to go on…
Our whitebait, served crisp with tartar sauce and a wedge of fresh lemon, is one of our most-loved starters — perfect as a “before” to your main or a lighter bite on its own.

Also on our starters board:
🥣 Soup of the Day with fresh bread
🍞 Homemade terrine with chutney
🧀 Baked cheese with bread and chutney to share

Tuck in and take your time — we believe every course deserves a little ceremony.
