Handover and Takeover of Command. On Thursday 8th February 2018, the battalion said farewell to our Commanding Officer for the past 2 years, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Moore (left) who moves on to yet another demanding appointment. Taking hold of the reins as we move towards the integration of 153 and 157 Companies into the fold is Lieutenant Colonel Jim Torbet (right), who has been the CO of 106 Battalion REME and will continue to direct their merger with the Northern Craftsmen. Exciting times lie ahead for the battalion, but today we say a heartfelt thank you to Colonel Nick for his leadership, and his genuine interest in the welfare and development of the soldiers of 102 Battalion REME. Colonel Nick will be remembered for many things, his personal attendance on all but two of the Phase 2 Pass Out parades for our craftsmen, his encouragement and leadership development of our NCOs and officers, but above all his awareness and interest in the reserve soldiers under his command. We wish Colonel Nick, his wife Emma and their two sons the very best for the future. Arte et Marte.

Breaking news. Congratulations to WO2
Jo Hart who moments ago became the Newton Aycliffe ARC badminton champion beating WO2 Eddie Fraser in the finals. The badminton ladder had been running since last summer. Eddie took it in good spirit particularly as today he is being dined out as he reaches the end of his 23 year career. Here's a picture of the finalists moments ago.

You're welcome.

Did you receive a copy of "One Darlington" through your letter box this month? If so you may well have recognised a familiar face on the front cover. WO2 Dave Tomlinson, his wife Sarah and "Milo" were snapped over Christmas while acting as voluntary marshals at the Darlington Park run and somehow ended up on the cover page. A great photograph we are sure you agree. "The Northern Craftsmen", serving the community on and off duty. #thisisbelonging

It is with sadness that we learned today of the passing of Lieutenant Colonel G W Ellington TD REME (V) who commanded 124 Recovery Company from Apr 1971 to June 1974. Colonel Ellington passed away in early December. He was 85 years of age. RIP.

Notice Board: Commanding Officer’s End of Year Message

We come to the end of 2017 and I am coming to the end of my time in Command of 102 Battalion REME, ‘The Northern Craftsman’. The cliché that it has been a busy is never more apt but I continue to be amazed by your collective commitment, dedication and professionalism in all that you do.
Looking back to January 2017, my first contact with you all was to brief you on the Army 2020 Refine Warning Order. The outcome will see 102 Battalion REME and 106 Battalion REME merge to form 102 Force Support Battalion REME. I was personally concerned about how the Battalion would face this change, how it would impact on you individually and whether the Battalion would be in a position to deliver ES capability; I need not have been concerned because your collective and individual achievements continue to be as impressive as ever.
Meeting LCH 28 tasking is the Battalion’s bread and butter. The Reserve Units in the region receive our support with the confidence that their training will continue. The efforts for QOY during ACT was a fine example of the quality of REME soldiers. Those that have received our support include both Reserve and Regular Units; 5 RRF, QOY, 101 Regt RA, NUOTC, 4 YORKS, 150 Regt RLC, 1 R IRISH, 2 YORKS, 6 Regt RLC, LD, 4 SCOTS, 1 CS Bn REME, 212 Fd Hosp, YOTR, 103 Fd Sqn RE, 19 Regt RA and I have probably missed some. I have not even included those Units who receive routine Armourer support courtesy of the network of FTRS Armourers. So there are Units in the region who have had a positive experience of working alongside the REME reserves; this is all down to you.
Equally, there have been some impressive personal achievements (and not just sports).
Capt Kev Yarker (PSAO 124 (TEE) Recy Coy) received the Commander Field Army Commendation and Mrs Alison Smith received a Lord Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service back in February. Cfn Georgia Smith (147 Coy) and Cfn Lynette Whitehouse (146 Coy) have started competing for the Army in their respective Martial Arts, with SSgt Brian Hall (186 Coy) continuing to compete and coach at the highest levels in Karate. Cfn Cooke (147 Coy) is representing the Army at Football and the Battalion has successfully defended the title of Reserve REME Battalion Cross Country Champions. Medal presentations of the Volunteer Reserve Service medal has been made to multiple recipients, showing 10 years of commitment, with others also receiving 1st, second and third clasps as well. A mention must go to SSgt Sapsford (146 Coy) who recently received his 4th Clasp and gold rosette, showing 30 years of service to the Reserves.
For a number of you who completed Adventurous Training in the Summer, this is a key part of what the Army Reserve offers. You will have learned personal and professional skills; please maintain and progress these qualifications in the coming years and, where you record continuous professional development for your employment, ensure that you list this. It is relevant.
The richness and depth of those who make up the Battalion is what makes it strong, what makes it unique and what makes it the place that it is. 2018 will be a challenging year as the battalion adopts its new structure and forms a new relationship with 106 Battalion REME but I am certain that 102 Battalion REME is very much up to facing this challenge head on.
I will finish by wishing all of you, and your nearest and dearest, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2018.

Congratulations to the winning REME AR Cross Country (us) who took part in the Corps Cross Country competition held at Tidworth on Wed 29th November 2017. The team (from left to right): SSgt Gibson, 124 Coy, Cfn Twidle, 147 Coy, SSgt Pressley, 147 Coy, Capt Ryder, RCMO, Lt Col Moore, CO, Cfn Smith, 147 Coy and WO2 McGuigan, Training Warrant Officer. Captain Ryder also won the "Guest Runner" category. Although a member of 102 Battalion REME since 2013, Capt Ryder still operates under his Royal Artillery capbadge - we forgive him! Well done one and all.

Adventure training and sport remain key components of Army service and as a member of the Northern Craftsman you can expect to be encouraged and supported in your sport of choice.

Eligius Sprocket preparation

We are looking forward to Exercise Eligius Sprocket 2017 when once again our four companies will be getting together as a battalion and showing off their technical skills for the last time in 2017. Amongst the challenges the companies will face are chariot building (and racing), pizza oven design and manufacture and even one for media production! Companies will also perform the nativity in a series of short productions. Here’s a tongue in cheek preview that did not make the finals of the Corporate identity challenge to give you an idea of what lies ahead. It’s a bit of fun and should be viewed as such.

Exercise SUPREME GLACIER 2017 (Week 1 pictures). Some great action photographs just in from Week 1. This group are now back from their brilliant week in Austria, while another 14 reservists and permanent staff have moved across for their turn. They will no doubt have just as much fun as the first group.
The problem with these high end anti-glare masks however is that without understanding who is wearing what everyone is pretty much anonymous!

Exercise SUPREME GLACIER 2017. This week 13 AR personnel and Permanent Staff of The Northern Craftsmen are attending a one week skiing exercise in Stubai Austria. Adventurous training is an important part of what we do in the Army Reserve, bringing fun, travel, challenge and adventure into our busy programme. A further 14 officers and soldiers will follow on next week. Activities such as these are open to all members of the Battalion and are always well received.

This report just in from the Commanding Officer's blog.

Day 3 and we are hoping for better weather on the glacier. It has been cold (-10 C and not accounting for wind chill) and the visibility has been poor.

On the upside, the snow is great.

The forecast today is for sun; Sgt Dave Fenwick has broken out his retro ski kit (the jacket is older than Q McGuigan!) although his 'roomie' Cpl Gary Dodd, has opted for a more conservative look.

It's a REME thing. The Pass Out Parade at ATR Grantham on Sunday 29th October was very much a REME affair as this photograph shows. From Left to right: Cfn Worrel, 118 Coy, 104 Battalion, Cfn Maguire, 118 Coy, 104 Battalion, Cfn Oswald, 125 Coy, 101 Battalion, 2Lt Kimberley Pickersgill, 147 Coy, 102 Bn, Brigadier MJ O'Leary, Asst Deputy Military Secretary, Cfn Clark, 124 Rec Coy, 102 Battalion, Cfn Darby, 103 Battalion and Cfn Dwyer, 146 Coy, 102 Battalion.

On Sunday 29th October we welcomed our two newest trained recruits into the fold. Craftsmen Chris Dwyer (146 Field Coy) and Cfn Chris Clark (124 Recovery Coy) both passed off parade at ATR Grantham this weekend. The event was made even more special as the Platoon Commander for the phase 1 (B) course they completed was none other than our own 2nd Lieutenant Kimberley Pickersgill, who commissioned earlier this year. Congratulations and an official welcome to both soldiers who will now join their companies as trained soldiers before moving on to complete Trade Training in the near future.
