Whitehouse Williamite Historical Society Dedicated to preserving, exploring and celebrating the history of the Williamite Period in Whitehouse

19/06/2026

Another year done and dusted and such a successful event it was. Our aim to promote the Whitehouse and its significance is now starting to be appreciated by our local community and indeed the residents of the area in which the building sits.

After he took over his Army, King William made his way to the Whitehouse to meet with military council and drew up a battle plan for the Boyne inside the very same building. A building that many of us pass on a daily basis and take for granted.

It was great to see such support for the event this year. A huge thank you to:

Sons of Kai Rathcoole
Rathcoole Protestant Boys
Imperial Guards
Castle Guards
Whitewell Tartan
Newtownards Melody
Pride of the Hill Carnmoney
City of Belfast Fifes and Drums

Also the accompanying Brethren from local Clubs and Lodges and guests.

An extended thanks must go to Newtownards Melody who after receiving the news that a former member Timothy Bailey had passed away still remained true to their word still turned up to support our event. Our sincere condolences go to the band and his family.

A massive thanks to our vendors on the day for providing the Food, Donuts and souvenir stall. Also to the residents of Whitehouse Park we thank you for making us welcome. A lot of residence enjoying the music from their gardens and it was a pleasure to watch all of you enjoy the event.

As mentioned before, Our aim is to grow our parade and promote a rich history that lies right on our doorstep. Anyone that would like to learn more about why this iconic building holds such a rich history it is open to the public and their opening times can be found on their website.

Any Bands, Lodges or Clubs that would be interested in being part of the parade please get in touch any time via this page or at [email protected]

Thanks again folks.

The White House in Newtownabbey is a fortified bawn (farmhouse) that stands as one of the oldest remaining buildings in Ulster, dating back to 1569. It got its name from its distinctive limestone wash coating, which made it a prominent landmark visible to ships navigating Belfast Lough.📜 450 Years of HistoryOrigins: Queen Elizabeth I originally gifted the land to an English soldier, Colonel Major Brunker, following military service in the Spanish Wars.Seizure: During the English Civil War, the house was seized from its owners because they refused to cooperate with Oliver Cromwell. The Williamite War (1689–1690): In 1689, King William III’s general, the Duke of Schomberg, marched into Ulster and set up his military headquarters at the White House. In June 1690, a massive fleet of 500 ships arrived in the Lough. Troops used the nearby ancient quay to disembark and set up camp. King William III, having landed up the coast at Carrickfergus, rode down to the White House to meet Schomberg and plan the march south toward the Battle of the Boyne.Industrial and Modern Era: In the 19th and 20th centuries, it fell into disrepair. It was later repurposed as a gospel hall before closing in 1997.

Ferdinand Willem, Duke of Wurttemberg-Neuenstadt(12sept1659-7thjune1701) German general in the Brunswick, Danish, Imperial and Dutch army.

Severely wounded in 1685 by a gunshot to the forehead near the fortress of Neuhäusel in the Great Turkish War. Initially, the doctors doubted whether he would survive, but after only 14 days, with his head bandaged, he stood at the head of the Franconian dragoons and led them to storm Neuhäusel.

1688, he re-entered Danish service and received command of the 7,000 men sent to England to aid William III against the Catholic troops under James II. His younger brother, Carl Rudolf, also participated in this campaign. Together, the two brothers fought at the Battle of the Boyne and contributed significantly to the subjugation of Ireland.

William III went so far as to say that : Next to God, the two brothers had contributed most to the victory.
