Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat

Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat Tynemouth RNLI station is situated on the East Quayside at North Shields on the River Tyne The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.

We provide a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and RoI, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales. The RNLI also works to promote sea and beach safety and has an ongoing Respect the Water campaign which aims to reduce UK & Eire coastal drownings by half, by 2024.

Great joint exercise with RNLI Newbiggin Lifeboat Station this morning!

Michael, our newest Coxswain, started his RNLI career at Newbiggin, so it was apt that his first exercise in solo command of the ALB was a joint exercise with our furthest flank station.
Great meet up to run through towing and boat familiarisation across both the Severn and the Atlantic!

Callout 29 of 2026 πŸ“ŸπŸš¨

Yesterday (18th May) at 16:22, both our inshore boat and all weather lifeboat were tasked to support Cullercoats RNLI with transporting 4 persons cut off by the tide at St Mary's lighthouse back to shore. Crew from Cullercoats lifeboat were already on shore and supporting the casualties, but due to the rocky outcrops, they were unable to get in close enough to transfer the casualties

Tynemouth ILB was able to get right in along the shore to allow the casualties a level transfer, taking them back to the causeway into the care of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade and Blyth Coastguard Rescue Team.

Great teamwork across all respective units to provide the best outcome to all affected casualties!

Remember if you need assistance by the coast, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Callout 26 of 2026 πŸ“ŸπŸš¨

On Saturday the 16th May, Tynemouth all weather lifeboat was tasked to a broken down boat drifting in the middle of the River Tyne.

Our ALB quickly arrived on scene, taking the casualty vessel under tow and back to Royal Quays marina.

This was one of the 7 callouts we've had in the last 7 days. A busy time for our volunteers who all manage work and family lives around these callouts - a huge thank you to everyone who helps make this happen.

We're recruiting for some key roles at station, including Lifeboat Operations Manager. The LOM heads up the operational side of the station, ensuring everything is running along smoothly, working with the RNLI to be the face of the station. If you're interested in the role you can apply here:

Huge congratulations to our newest Coxswain, Michael Brown on passing his assessment yesterday!

The coxswain on a lifeboat is one of the most important roles, taking command of our All Weather lifeboat and it's crew in some of the toughest conditions.

Michael, already a Helm on our D-Class and Navigator on our ALB, has been hard at work over the last 2 years to hone his skills to taking the step to becoming coxswain. Huge well done!

Callout 20 of 2026 πŸš¨πŸ“Ÿ

Today at 12:13, both Tynemouth All weather lifeboat and Inshore lifeboat were tasked to Marsden, South Shields to reports of an overdue swimmer.

Both boats conducted search patterns along the coastline, with our ILB sticking as close to shore as possible and our ALB stepped off looking further out.

We were joined by the Coastguard rescue helicopter from Carlisle to support the search while land based teams combed the coastline.

After 3 hours searching all rescue teams were stood down, as the person had been located inland safe and well. False alarm with good intent.

A first callout for our launch authority Dave Trevena and crew member Adrian Cantle-Jones. Well done both!

Remember if you need assistance by the coast dial 999 and ask for the coastguard

It's been a busy bank holiday for our volunteers with shouts 18 & 19 of 2026 taking place over the weekend.

On the 3rd May, Tynemouth ILB was requested to launch to a suspected person in the water at South Shields. As the lifeboat was heading to scene it was confirmed by Police that it was in fact balloons that were sitting on the water.
With no one further in trouble the ILB returned to station.

On the 4th May, both of Tynemouth boats were tasked to Souter lighthouse to another reported person in the water. Both boats made there way on scene, setting off numerous flares to illuminated the area to help with the search.

After 2 hours and land based teams from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) checking from the shore, all teams were stood down.

We're recruiting for a number of shore based roles at station if you're looking to give something back and help our crews!
