Today saw a magnificent performance from with our cadets winning a slew of medals across track and field events at the Durham/Northumberland Wing Athletics Competition.

In all our cadets picked up 7 medals, with Cdt Race taking home both gold and bronze in the discus and long jump, and Cdt Dunn silver for the shot put in the Under 14 male category.

Cdt Parkinson bagged himself a silver medal in the long jump and bronze in the 200m in the Under 16 males.

Meanwhile, Cdts Baker and Stafford picked up gold in the javelin and bronze in the long jump respectively in the Under 16 female division.

Our gold medal winners will now be invited to represent Durham/Northumberland Wing at the Inter-Wing Athletics Competition in June.

It is not all about the results, however, although our medal winning cadets performances made for an amazing day.

The event is also about team spirt with the competition showcasing determination, sportsmanship, and great camaraderie with cadets from across the Wing giving their all for their Squadrons.

Congratulations to all the cadets who took part in this year’s Wing Athletics Competition and represented their Squadrons with pride.

Events like the athletics offer cadets the chance to not only challenge themselves, but develop their teamwork skills and resilience, and enjoy competitive activities within the Air Cadets.

💫The End of an Era 💫

On Tuesday we said farewell to CWO Alex Sutherland as he timed out as a cadet. Thankfully, he’s not going far, as he will be staying on as a Civilian Instructor to pass on his knowledge and experience.

CWO Sutherland was the longest-serving cadet in Durham Northumberland Wing, having joined the squadron in September 2018. During his time as a cadet, he achieved the Master classification, Gold First Aid, Silver Musician Badge, Silver DofE, and Silver Cyber and many more. He was also nominated as the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for 2024/25 and became the first cadet in the wing since 2019 to complete the Nijmegen Marches. Alex is now helping train the 2026 DNW team for the same challenge.

Beyond the badges and achievements, Alex has been a huge asset to the squadron, leading the NCO team through the challenges following Covid and supporting the squadron through many other demanding periods. His commitment, leadership, and dedication have made a lasting impact on both staff and cadets alike.

Alex will continue to be a familiar face around the wing, passing on his expertise, and we know he will make an excellent addition to the staff team at .

So, farewell CWO Sutherland — and welcome to the team, CI Sutherland!

🚨🚒 TWFRS Fire Cadet Joint Parade Night 🚒🚨

A huge thank you to the TWFRS Fire Cadets for having us and letting us join forces tonight 👏

We got hands-on with the hoses, watched some of their drills in action had a go ourselves, and even had a full tour of the station.

It was a brilliant opportunity to see how another cadet unit runs their parade nights and to get a real insight into the amazing work the fire service does in our local area 🚨

We really appreciate the warm welcome — and we can’t wait to return the favour and host the fire cadets at soon! 🙌
