On Sunday the 19th April, the RAF Founders Day was held at St Clement Danes, The Central Church of the RAF, London. To mark the 108th Anniversary since its formation. Bringing together the wider service family together, the service commemorated the formation of the RAF in 1918 as the worlds oldest independent Air Force.
Station Commander, Group Captain Lawson and his Wife were accompanied by 609 Sqn Cpl’s, Baker, Grant & Vinand to represent RAF Leeming, both at the Church Service and the Air Force Board Reception afterwards.
Having travelled by train on the Saturday, we were able to take the sights in the evening. Staying in the Strand Palace is highly recommended.
The Church service was very formal as expected, the Kings colour being paraded into Church. The sermon was given by Chaplain-in-chief AVM Giles Legwood. It was both informative and humorous, explaining how the Church was rebuilt after WW2 after the Luftwaffe did its best to destroy the building. Music was provided by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and the Choir of St Clement who were excellent.
Afterwards we attended a reception at the Royal Courts of Justice, Strand. Along with drinks and canapes we mingled with the VIP’s and invited guests, getting to chat with some of the veterans and past acquaintances.
A very enjoyable experience which I would highly recommend to anyone who gets the chance to attend in the future.
