Are you a parent or guardian heading somewhere with open water this weekend?
Please take a moment to read our water safety advice and share it with your family and friends.

Even on warm days, water can be dangerously cold. Always enter the water slowly, jumping or diving in can cause cold water shock.

Before going into the water, take a look around for safety equipment and be sure to follow any warning signs or flags.

Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, so always keep a close eye on children and anyone in your group when they’re in or near the water.

If you see someone in trouble, don’t enter the water yourself. Call 999 and ask for
the Fire Service if inland or the Coastguard if at the coast Encourage the person to float on their back, and if you can, look for nearby rescue equipment you can throw to them.

If you’re heading out on the roads this weekend, please take care.

With more motorcycles likely to be out, we’re asking drivers to be bike aware. Take a little longer to look, and double-check your mirrors .

Whatever you’re driving or riding, always adjust your speed to the road conditions.
Remember, on country roads there could be slow moving vehicles, like tractors, just around the corner.

🚤 Our Prevention team will be in York city centre alongside the River Ouse on Friday 29 May (10am-3pm) sharing practical boat and water safety advice as part of Boat Safety Week (25–31 May).

We’re reminding boat owners and houseboat residents across North Yorkshire to put fire safety first when enjoying time on the water. A small fire on board can escalate in seconds with serious risks including explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

🛟 Stay safe with these essentials:
✅ Check and maintain fuel, gas and electrics regularly
🔔 Install and test smoke alarms
⚠️ Fit a carbon monoxide alarm — it’s a silent killer
🛶 Agree an emergency plan before you set off
🔌 Know how to isolate fuel, electrics and LPG
🧯 Keep extinguishers easy to reach
🛢️ Store flammable liquids safely
🚨 If fire breaks out:
• Inland/marina: get everyone off and call 999
• At sea: move to open deck, wear life jackets and make a MAYDAY call

In dry conditions, fires can start easily and spread quickly, putting people, wildlife and communities at risk.

If you’re planning to visit moorland, the countryside or forests this week or over the weekend, please remember:

Warm weather + dry ground = increased wildfire risk.

If you’re out enjoying our countryside or National Parks, help us protect these special places and the communities who live there.

Please:

❌ Do not use BBQs on grassland or moorland
🚭 Don’t drop ci******es
🚯 Take your litter home

One small mistake can cause devastating damage.

📲 If you see a fire, call 999 immediately, don’t assume someone else has reported it.
🚗 Park responsibly and ensure emergency vehicles can always get through.

Together, we can help protect our countryside and keep everyone safe.

We’re sending our thoughts to the families who have tragically lost loved ones this weekend after incidents in the water, including in South and West Yorkshire.

As the warm weather continues this half-term, we’re urging everyone to take extra care around open water.

While it may be tempting to cool off, rivers, lakes and reservoirs can remain dangerously cold even in hot conditions. Cold water shock can occur instantly, putting even strong swimmers at serious risk.

Here's some advice:
- Speak to young people about the dangers of open water.
- Swim in supervised locations.
- Do not jump into water to cool off.
- Never enter the water to attempt a rescue – instead call 999 immediately.
- Do not enter the water if you have been drinking alcohol.
- Make sure you know how to help yourself and other people in the event of a water-related emergency.

If you see someone else in trouble in the water, remember Phone, Float, Throw:
📲Phone 999 to get help
Tell them to stay calm and float on their back.
🛟Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive

On Monday our Pickering Crew was called to Dalby Forest where smoke had been seen.

Crews found a small campfire within the forest which they extinguished using a hose reel jet and shovels. They also gave advice to the responsible person present.

Please remember:

In dry conditions, fires can start easily and spread rapidly, it puts us all at risk.

If you’re planning a visit to our moorland, countryside or forests this week please remember:

No BBQs or open fires
Dispose of ci******es safely
Take all litter home , especially glass bottles
Know your location, use what3words if needed
If you see smoke or flames, move to safety and call 999

A big thank you to our local North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service stations for their rapid response over the bank holiday weekend.

Over the past few days, our team has encountered campfires, gas stoves and barbecues in the forest. All of these are strictly prohibited. The image shows exactly why. Even when you think they are under control, they can ignite devastating fires in moments.

Following last year’s moorland fire and with the UK currently at an Amber Fire Risk, these rules are not optional. They are in place to protect lives, wildlife and the forest itself.

Fires can spread rapidly. They put people in danger and cause irreversible damage to habitats that take years, sometimes decades, to recover.

If you are planning a visit this week, do the responsible thing. Leave anything that could start a fire at home and bring a cold picnic instead.

Help us protect the forest. No fires. No exceptions.

🚤 Boat fires can spread fast, even on water.

As part of Boat Safety Week (25–31 May), we’re urging boat owners and houseboat residents across North Yorkshire to put fire safety first while enjoying time on the water.

A small onboard fire can escalate in seconds, leading to serious injury or even death especially with risks like explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Many of the same fire safety rules from your home apply on your boat but being on the water brings additional risks.

Stay safe with these essential steps:

✅ Regularly check and maintain fuel, gas, and electrical systems
🔔 Install smoke alarms for early warning, regularly test them too
⚠️ Fit a carbon monoxide alarm, it’s a silent killer
🛶 Make an emergency plan with everyone on board before you set out
🔌 Know how to safely isolate fuel, electrics, and LPG in an emergency
🧯 Keep fire extinguishers visible, accessible, and close to key areas
🛢️ Store flammable liquids safely, away from heat and naked flames

If fire starts on your boat and you are inland, in a marina or harbour, get everybody off and call 999. If fire starts at sea, move to open deck and as far from the fire as you can. Put on life jackets. Make MAYDAY call.

Check out our website for more information. Link in comments.

Tomorrow’s set to be a hot one ☀️

But even when the air feels warm, open water stays cold. Cold water shock can affect your breathing and ability to swim within seconds. If you do enter the water, take it slow. Don’t jump straight in, give your body time to adjust.

Be aware of hidden hazards too. Submerged objects and thick vegetation can make it difficult to swim and get back to safety.

If you see someone in trouble, call 999 immediately. Ask for the fire service if you’re inland, or the Coastguard if you’re at the coast.

Enjoy the sunshine – but stay safe
