Holdenby House

Holdenby House Once an Elizabethan Palace, Holdenby now hosts weddings, events & visitors over the summer season Follow us on Twitter & Instagram

Holdenby House is the surviving wing of the Elizabethan Palace built in 1583 by Sir Christopher Hatton, Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I. It subsequently became the palace of James I and the prison of Charles I following his defeat in the Civil War. Holdenby is now a much loved family home, and is opened up for just a handful of weddings each year, making this a really exclusive venue for your

big day. The house and Grade I listed gardens are made available on the basis of your exclusive use and the house is licensed for civil ceremonies. There is a suite of elegant rooms stretching the whole south side of the house overlooking the stunning gardens which in turn look onto views of rolling countryside with not a building in sight. Take a look at our page and get in contact with us, we would be delighted to show you around the house and gardens and discuss the finer details of your big day.

πŸŒ™ A Mysterious Lady and Her Faithful Companion...

One of the most intriguing characters in Holdenby House history was Lady Annaly, who lived much of her life in seclusion within the House.

A newspaper article from 1944 describes how, although rarely seen during the day, Lady Annaly would often wander the gardens at night, whatever the weather, accompanied by her beloved dog, Tous Tous.

While life at Holdenby continued around her, with visitors and guests coming and going, Lady Annaly remained something of a mystery, preferring the peace and tranquillity of her own surroundings.

Today, her story still lives on at Holdenby. In fact, one of our gardens is named Tous Tous, in memory of the faithful companion who accompanied her on those evening walks around the gardens.

It's wonderful to think that over 80 years later, visitors can still enjoy a small connection to one of Holdenby's most fascinating residents.

πŸ’¬ Have you visited the Tous Tous Garden?

πŸ‘‘ DID YOU KNOW? πŸ‘‘

Back in 1647, King Charles I was imprisoned at Holdenby Palace following his defeat in the English Civil War β€” and he remained here for five months.

Despite being held captive, the King lived in relatively comfortable surroundings with around 120 servants attending to him during his stay at Holdenby!

It’s believed that during his time here he enjoyed many traditional country pursuits including hunting, archery and playing boules, as well as taking daily walks through the gardens. In fact, local stories say he walked at such a brisk pace that his keeper, Lord Pembroke, struggled to keep up with him!

Today, part of the gardens at Holdenby House still honour this fascinating chapter in history. The King Charles Walk, once part of the original Elizabethan Gardens, is now beautifully planted with herbaceous plants and shrubs for visitors to enjoy.

History truly surrounds Holdenby House 🌿

Have you walked the King Charles Walk before?
