Today is the Feast of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters, and the international firefighter memorial day.

It is the day where we remember all of those who have fallen within the line of duty. This is why many of you saw Red Watch parading outside the station at 1200hrs today.

Today is also a day to celebrate and thank all active duty operational firefighters around the world.

❄️Snow Day!❄️

While many stations in Northamptonshire are covered in snowmen and splattered snowballs, we would just like to remind you all that while playing in the snow, watch out for hidden ice.

As the temperatures are still very low, many lakes around Northamptonshire are frozen solid. The ice is thick enough to fool many people. Please talk to your children, as simple games like throwing rocks at the ice or observing large birds effortlessly walking on it can give them false confidence that the ice will support them. It will not.

Apart from improvised ice skating, another real danger are the paths around waterways. We have observed ice all over the pavements, covered by snow. It is very easy to slip and fall into the water, without ever intending to. If out and about on walks, try and stay with others, and if you observe an accident call 999 straight away. Do not attempt to go on the (now weakened) ice to rescue casualties yourself.

Mereway and Wellingborough water rescue crews remain on standby and are ready to deploy to water related emergencies, with the Mereway Technical Rescue crew ready to carry out ice based rescues using the Technical Rescue Vehicle (TRV).

Merry Christmas to everyone, have an amazing day. Enjoy this festive period, and if you can, remember about those less fortunate than ourselves.

Mereway Fire Station remains open 24/7, ready to mobilise crews in seconds. While we hope that they will have a quiet night on station, they are always ready to respond and help if needed.

Drive safe over the holidays, be wary of road conditions, water your Christmas trees and ensure your chimneys and flues are clear of any debris before using live fires to heat your home.

Blue Watch from Mereway and The Mounts Fire Station joined forces with paramedic students from the University of Northampton for a training exercise designed to strengthen joint emergency response skills during last week's Road Safety Week.

The exercise, a simulated road traffic collision between two cars, took place at our station and provided the crews and 10, third-year paramedic students with a realistic environment to test and practise their skills alongside emergency service colleagues that they would encounter in a real-life accident.

Firefighters used their training to safely secure and stabilise the vehicles before using equipment and tools to remove the doors and roof of one of the cars. This created safe access for the paramedic students to reach and treat the ‘casualties’.

The ‘casualties’ were played by our Northamptonshire Emergency Services Cadets who gave bafta-worthy performances throughout the whole exercise.

The exercise showed the importance of teamwork between first-responder partners that is essential at real emergency incidents, ensuring that people who have found themselves needing our help can be taken care of safely and efficiently.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking people to follow advice and have fun safely during the Halloween and Bonfire Night period.

We would always recommend only attending organised firework and bonfire displays but urge members of the public that are planning on holding their own display to do so safely to avoid causing fires and injuries.

Darren Carson, Prevention Team Leader at Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “While the number of fires we attend during this period is reducing year by year, we still want to urge people to follow safety advice to keep themselves, their families and their homes safe.

“It is a fun time of year and we want people to enjoy fireworks and bonfires, but we really encourage members of the public to only go to an official display and avoid having them in back gardens.

“If you do have your own display or bonfire and it gets out of control, or you see any unattended fires, please always call 999 and ask for the Fire Service.”

The UK government is testing the Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 7 September 2025 at 3pm.

Your mobile phone or tablet will vibrate and make a loud siren-like sound, even if it’s set on silent. The alert message will confirm this is a test and that you do not need to take any further action.

Regular testing ensures the system is functioning correctly, should it need to be used in a life-threatening emergency. Find out more at gov.uk/alerts.

You can opt out of the Emergency Alerts, including the national test, but you should keep them switched on for your own safety.

Emergency Alerts will warn you via your mobile or tablet if there's a life-threatening emergency nearby. Only the government and the emergency services are able to send them.
