CANTO Learning Ltd is sad to announce that it’s founder, Barrie Willis MBE, passed away on Friday 15th May 2026 and wishes to recognise the many years he gave to the organisation.
Barrie established CANTO in Robert Street Northampton in 1992, as he transformed the family business to meet the needs he was recognising in the community. This need was initially for re-training those who had been out of work for a long period of time, to re-develop their skills so they could potentially re-engage in the job market.
Barrie quickly realised that many had support needs outside of pure employment and set about supporting as he could in these areas too. CANTO developed and soon Barrie was leading CANTO to meet need the need of those attending by receiving funding from adult social care and later education.
He believed all deserved an opportunity and were entitled to quality education or training.
Under Barrie’s leadership CANTO grew and developed. He witnessed hundreds of students join CANTO all needing additional support before they could move on to successful outcomes. Whilst many challenges were faced during those early years Barrie's determination never wavered in wanting to meet the growing need in the community.
His determination and commitment was recognised in 2005 as he received a MBE for his work within the community after being nominated by a parent of a young man attending the provision.
Barrie, with his team, over saw the move into our current premises in 2016 before he stepped back. As CANTO became the charity CANTO Learning Ltd, and he took on the role of Chair of Trustees. Even when this role was relinquished, he took great delight in hearing about and visiting CANTO Learning to see his work continuing.
The staff team endeavour to work hard and continue the legacy that Barrie commenced and impact the lives of those that attend the college.
