Grozone Community Garden Grozone is a community garden, horticulture and wildlife project based at the former Dane Nurseries

Grozone is a flourishing community garden, horticulture and wildlife project in the middle of Northwich, Cheshire

We provide volunteering opportunities for all and social and horticultural therapy for people with mild to moderate depression and anxiety. This 'hidden oasis' is a fantastic place for mind and body, where you can learn new skills or share and develop existing ones in a welcoming and

sociable outdoor environment. The garden is open to everybody Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays 10am - 3pm. Come down, meet the team and take a look around the working garden.

It’s been another busy week at Grozone.

We have harvested grapes, damsons, radishes, squash, broad beans, dwarf green beans and chick peas!

Our giant’s head has had some repairs and we have been painting the roof supports of our new shelter.

We also had a special guest appearance from… Percy!

What another wonderful week at Grozone.

We finished the week with a visit from a volunteer from the Butterfly Trust who did some moth trapping and showed us the moths that were found. We had a robin having a nosy at the moths - we think it thought the moths were breakfast!

Moths found were:

Large yellow underwing
Common wave
Willow beauty
Turnip moth
Flame shoulder
Common underwing agg.
Straw Dot

What a busy and hot week we have had at Grozone. Despite the heat, we have got lots done. We have done repairs, removed invasive Himalayan balsam, processed wood, harvested veg, weeded, watered (and watered and watered!) created beautiful prints using Tataki-zomé/hapa-zome and focused on colours during our Wellies in the Woods session.

It hasn’t all been hard work though - we found time to eat delicious banana cake baked by one of our volunteers, we took part in the Big Butterfly Count Conservation and we got the Grozone paddling tarpaulin out to cool down.

We had a fantastic team from Miller Homes Ltd visit Grozone yesterday and do some volunteering.

They did an amazing job of pruning some of our cherry plums and espalier apple trees, wood processing and surveying wildlife. They even cleaned the roof windows of our yurts.

Thank you, Miller Homes.

We had a fantastic day at Grozone on Tuesday with the help from a team from JLL who did an amazing job of pruning our espalier fruit trees, pruning our willow structures, sifting leaf mould, pruning hedges and processing the wood from a damaged cherry plum tree. They even did some plumbing repairs for us!

Thank you JLL.

We have been harvesting our soft fruit this week including red and black currants, tayberries and gooseberries. The Birds have been enjoying them, too, especially a blackbird familiy which has been feasting on the tayberries.

We have also harvested lots of lettuce, which tastes delicious.

As well as harvesting, we have been doing general site maintenance, weeding, watering, dead-heading and building new compost heaps and planters.

During Tuesdays mindful contact with nature session, we used the power of plants and the sun to do some printing. We used turmeric, but it can also be done with spinach and beetroot which we might try in future sessions.

Coping with the hot weather only brings out the creativity of the Grozone team: Tony and Matthew have been trialling a prototype cooling foot bath, while we have also resurrected our 'Desert Fridge' to keep our milk cold. It's totally off-grid and simply uses some big pots, some wet sand and the latent heat of evaporation (We only know this thanks Rob, who seems to be the only one of us who paid attention during physics lessons at school)
