Louisa Longstaff-Scales, How Morning Feels

'This is a painting about being enveloped in morning. It is a painting how it feels to be about standing on the land in the early morning, as it is newly lit with a low golden light. The sensation of being surrounded by morning as the light carries you out of night and confronts you with a beauty that is bigger that yourself, and places you squarely into the fresh, present, possibility of a new day.'

Telfer Stokes, Vecu

'My purpose is to bring very different elements together to make a cohesive whole object. The subject of this piece is in the title: Vecu is a French word and it summarises something lived or experienced.'

Amanda Ansell, Sparkle

This small abstract began with the artist's experience of floodwater and moonlight. The composition explores submerged terrain, shifting reflections, and saturation. It is a study in tonal restraint and a response to the emotional resonance of place. Ansell reflects that 'The two circles (moon/moon reflection) become a formal device – a means to hold stillness and movement in tension, and to evoke glimmers on the surface of depth.'

James Metsoja, Grandad’s Boat

Of this small and beautiful painting James writes: 'Grandad's Boat is a painting of my maternal Grandad's box of blue chalks that I turned into a sculpture of an ark-like boat. I have one memory of him. While I was making the painting I thought also about my paternal Grandad and how when he was sixteen he fled Estonia during the second World War and embarked on a harrowing journey ending in a Wales. This small boat painting is my heritage.'

Ed Halsey, White Cloud
Ed Halsey creates small-scale two dimensional works that play with a floating sense of time. With a strong emphasis on colour and line these paintings often focus on the familiar. ‘The main thought with White Cloud was to not make another nocturnal picture which seems to be my go-to. Keeping the movement and the white became the aim, with enough description of place.’

Tor Falcon, May Blossom, Dusk
Tor Falcon has for many years worked outside, drawing the world around her, often focussing on long-term projects that have recorded paths, rivers and the movements of the moon. Of this work Falcon writes, ‘Here I am engulfed in blossom, struggling to fit the entirety of this thorn bush onto my paper. I have known and admired and been interested in this thorn since I first noticed its serrated leaves in the sward of the big field about 30 years ago’.

We had an unforgettable day at Hemingford Grey Manor with the marvellous Diana Boston, learning about the incredible lives of artists Lucy Boston, author of the Green Knowe children’s books, and Elizabeth Vellacott. Our thanks to our guides Ian Collins and Frances Spalding for all the wonderful stories they shared. Truly delightful!
