The UEA Rent Fightback campaign is looking to champion students by anonymously sharing the personal accounts of those who have been affected by the universities shameful Ziggurat price hike. All personal accounts are appreciated and will be integral to highlighting how unfair and immoral these price hikes have been especially - but not exclusively - for those from lower socio-economic demographics.

Anyone interested can either join the Rent Hike Fightback group chat, to which you will be added after filling out this form (https://forms.gle/UPnQ4m6oEFbSTQHG9) and submit a personal account to our members, or privately send a description of how this price hike has impacted them to [email protected].

Please note that we will make sure all accounts are posted anonymously and that a very small number of individuals have access to our email account; the privacy of our peers is one of our key priorities.

Due to declining revenues, the university has found a reprehensible way to maintain their income. Single occupants of twin rooms in the Ziggurats have had the price of their rent doubled from £79.45 a week, to a staggering £158.83 a week. Bearing in mind that the Ziggurats are supposed to be the cheapest accommodation on campus - and many people choose to live them in to due to a having a very limited budget - it seems that the university has decided to make the most financially vulnerable students shoulder the burden of covering the losses the University has experienced. This is made worse by the fact that it was UEA that marketed the Ziggurats as the most cost effective accommodation on campus, and were only told about the change days before entering accommodations!

Rent fightback UEA is fighting for an immediate reversal of this rent price increase. Since the University has rejected both a petition and pleads from the SU, we propose that the SU take a more direct stance against UEA on this matter. Students everywhere across the country are taking part in rent strikes and demonstrations against their own universities, and the SU should be willing to help such direct action against UEA as well.
