Community Klaxon! We are hosting two sessions of consultation regarding the use of cars in Britannia Rd around the top of Mousehold's St James' Hill area. Q***r Readers, our new over 18's LGBTQ+ book group is back on October 6th, we are reading Ordinary Saints this month and there are plenty of copies in the library waiting for you! The group is open to all regardless of how they identify and takes place on the first Tuesday of each month between 5.30-6.30pm, no need to book, just turn up and chat about the book, maybe suggest a title for future reading etc. If you need a little longer to get through a book, just ask at the counter and we can offer a longer loan for items borrowed for these events. Get involved and hope to see you there.

Saturday morning book club, last Saturday of the month, 10am-11am so you've got the rest of the day available and all the books we choose will be under 200 pages. Everyone welcome, naturally it is free to join in, see you there!

Book Group Klaxon!
We have two new book groups starting in September, the first will be the Q***r Readers LGBTQ+ book club which launches on Tuesday 1st September at 5.30-6.30 (everyone welcome, identifying as not q***r is not a problem, the books are likely to feature themes and content that appeals broadly to that audience). We have a book in the branch waiting for you to kick off the group, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. Described as a multi-generational novel following identical twin sisters Desiree and Stella Vignes. Growing up in Mallard, Louisiana—a community that prizes light skin—they run away at age 16. Stella chooses to pass as white and cuts ties, while Desiree has a dark-skinned daughter, Jude, and returns south. Something to get your teeth into!

Beginning on Saturday 26th we have the Short Book Club, all books under 200 pages so there's no reason not to join in! The club will meet 10am-11am but you will be welcome to stay and chat about the book, or other books or indeed anything you like for as long as you want, as long as you've left by 4pm when all the lights go out! The first book will be Claire Keegan's Small Things Like These. A short novel set in 1985 in a small Irish town in midwinter which has been described as powerful, emotional and full of empathy and defiance. Raise your fists and yell against cruelty!

Pop into the branch to pick up a copy of Vanishing Half now, or next week for a copy of Small Things Like These, as we approach the darker months why not have a proper reason to engage with the world that doesn't cost a penny!

Who's children are wanting to take part in the (always free of charge) Summer Reading Challenge 2026 - Read to the Beat? All you need to do is come in while we are staffed, so today until 7pm or tomorrow from 10-4 are your next chances, and tell us they want to enter. We click a few button, hand over a booklet and a sticker chart then it's up to you, they just need to read (or have read to them) six books over the summer holidays, any books they want! Minecraft, Pokemon, Dogman, Harry Potter, Roald Dahl, anything they are inspired to read and enjoy! They'll return to school in September with more reading skills and have an smoother transition to their next level of education! Pop in any time to find out more.

Incoming News Klaxon! The one of a kind Norfolk traversing icon, Malcolm Metcalf, is coming to Plumstead Road Library as a guest of our lovely Library Friends Group on Wednesday July 29th at 2pm. He will be giving a talk about an adventure he set himself on a few years back. 90 Challenges in My 90th Year is Malcolm's rollercoaster story of doing 90 different things in a year for the first or only time, some are quite eye opening! If you've heard about Malcolm you know you are in for a treat, if you haven't then let me assure you, Mr Metcalf is the classic, nay consummate Norfolk raconteur with the most endearing and enthusiastic way about him. You will not fail to be charmed! Malcolm raises money for the wonderful work done at Priscilla Bacon Hospice Charity
