This week our Warden Lewis noticed lots of movement in the pool underneath a fallen tree's root plate. What first appeared to be small, moving twigs were actually caddisfly larvae. There are around 14,500 described species of caddisfly globally, and all have an aquatic larvae stage and a terrestrial adult stage. The larvae are well known to form protective cases out of silk and strengthen them with debris such as sand and twigs - this is what Lewis observed! The adults have a moth-like appearance with 2 pairs of hairy membranous wings. Keep your eyes peeled next time you visit!
