Have you heard of Himalayan Balsam?? Did you know it’s an invasive species?? Can you help us??

“🌸 Join our Balsam Bashing sessions 🌸

Himalayan balsam might look attractive, but it spreads rapidly and crowds out our native plants, reducing habitat for wildlife and leaving riverbanks bare and prone to erosion later in the year. By helping remove it before it sets seed, you will be taking direct action to protect local biodiversity and improve the health of our green spaces.

Come along for a relaxed drop-in session between 10am and 12pm on Saturday 13th & Saturday 27th June. Stay for as little or as long as you like and get involved at your own pace.

Please bring and wear:
• Gardening gloves
• A drink to stay hydrated
• Long trousers and long sleeves to protect against nettles and scratches

No experience is needed, and guidance will be provided on the day. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors, meet others, and support invasive species control in your local area.

We would love to see you there 🌿”

Local resident Chris Smith restores Community Totem Pole.

Chris has spent weeks restoring the Totem Pole in Radcliffe on Trent to its original creation. Chris kindly carved and donated the Totem Pole to the Village in May 2013.

In recent weeks, Chris has spent hours repairing and repainting the Totem Pole. When asked why, Chris said,
“Originally I carved and donated the pole to commemorate 50 years since the Canadians left Radcliffe On Trent. This was an important part of my childhood and I am keen that those fond memories we all have are not forgotten."

The Radcliffe on Trent Parish Council would like to thank Chris on behalf of everyone in Radcliffe for his generosity and outstanding efforts.

THE RIVERSIDE AND RADCLIFFE’S LILY PONDS – A GUIDED WALK ON SATURDAY, MAY 30TH

Meet Phillip Taylor at 2 p.m. by Rockley Park entrance gates (top of Park Road) for a walk around this Local Wildlife Site. Find out more about the site, its history and its flora and fauna and how it is currently being managed by the community Nature Conservation Group with input from other wildlife organisations in partnership with Radcliffe Parish Council.

This walk is free and open to all and is part of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s ‘Out and About with Wildlife Programme 2026’. No booking is required. The walk is expected to last around an hour and a half. Please note that access to the riverside is via a long set of steps from the Cliff Walk so a reasonable level of fitness and appropriate footwear is required. Please consider bringing a drink with you (plus sunhat!), especially if the weather is warm.
For further information, please contact Phillip Taylor via the following email address, [email protected]
About Radcliffe Nature Conservation Group.

We are a small community group of Radcliffe residents, established for over ten years, who are involved in practical conservation work both at the Riverside / Lily Ponds and at Dewberry Hill. Our work involves tree planting and maintenance, mowing/cutting back of minor paths by the river and some areas around the
benches, organising scrub clearance and doing survey work on Dewberry Hill. We also work in conjunction with Rushcliffe Borough Council, the Parish Council and other environmental and wildlife organisations (Notts. Bat Group, South Notts.
Ringing Group, Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency) on a variety of associated projects to help manage our two Local Wildlife Sites in accordance with agreed Five Year Plans.
In order to continue this valuable programme of work, we need to strengthen our group for the future by recruiting more volunteers. If you’re reasonably fit and active, enjoy working outdoors and can spare a couple of hours mid-week, we’d love to hear from you (contact details – email address above). Membership is free, most tools are provided and we currently meet most Wednesday mornings at 09.30.

To raise the profile of Hedgehogs that are now on the ‘at risk’ list, the Biodiversity and Environment Working Group are organising a couple of activities in line with Hedgehog Awareness Week, next Saturday 9th May! There will be a Hedgehog Trail for children alongside a litter pick, which we’d encourage families to engage with too as litter is so dangerous for wildlife. Meet at the Grange at 10.30-12.
