Green's Windmill and Science Centre

Green's Windmill and Science Centre Home of George Green, Nottingham’s mathematical miller. Free entry. Open Wednesday to Sunday 10am - 4pm. There’s something for all the family!
(265)

Green’s Windmill is a restored 19th Century tower mill, once home to mathematical physicist George Green. Working again since 1986, climb the windmill and see how our sails turn grain into flour. In our interactive Science Centre discover the remarkable story of George Green, and experiment with the things that fascinated him, such as light, electricity and magnetism. During your visit explore the award winning community garden, much like a typical garden from Green’s Day.

Join us in a week’s time for weaving, spinning and dyeing!

Members of the Nottingham Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers return to Green’s Windmill on Sunday 14th June 11am-3pm for a special event, From Fleece to...?

See them demonstrate their skills, including how sheep’s fleece can be spun by hand into beautiful yarn and then used to create lovely craft items.
Have a go for yourself at spinning with a drop spindle or a wheel or add your own contribution to a communal weaving. But beware: spinning and weaving can be addictive!

No booking required, just drop in.

It’s Volunteers' Week! 🎉

We’d like to recognise all our hardworking, passionate and dedicated volunteers this Volunteers' Week who work to keep Green’s Windmill and Science Centre open 💕

Thanks to our volunteers we provide an invaluable educational and heritage resource, stimulate minds about the story of George Green and teach where our food comes from through our garden and baking workshops. We see approximately 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ visitors annually and together volunteers inform and inspire them all about the core themes of the site: science 🧲, mathematics 🧮, heritage 🧱, environment 🌳 and art 🖼️

Last year 4️⃣9️⃣ volunteers contributed 3️⃣7️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ hours and helped with visitor services 🗣️, events 🍞, gardening 🪏, tours 👣, and DIY 🛠️. They are by far our biggest asset, and it is thanks to their commitment we continue to remain open; it simply would not be possible without them. As such we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to all our wonderful volunteers! 🙌

💚💚💚

ps if you’d like to join our Queen’s Award winning team you can find more details on our website! We’d be delighted to hear from you.

Green’s Meditations - A New Exhibit in Association with University of Nottingham

On Friday a special event was held to launch an exciting new permanent exhibit in the Science Centre. Its part two of a project called ‘Green’s Meditations’ by students from the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Nottingham. This second part is a 3D model of a ‘potential landscape’ and shows how opposite charges behave differently in the same potential landscape via peaks and valleys. It compliments part one of the exhibit which is an animation illustrating how points of charge alter space through an invisible form called the electric potential.

George Green noticed the importance of a potential function and gave it its name on the very first page of his seminal 1828 essay the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism.

We’d like to congratulate and thank students Sarah and Jorge for their success in developing such a remarkable and interesting exhibit and bringing it to fruition, along with Professor Amalia Patane with support by technical professionals from UoN. We’d also like to thank windmill volunteers Dave & Mark for installing the exhibit.

In the main photo you can see (l-r) Green’s Windmill Trust Heritage Development Officer Jamie Duff with Sarah, Amalia and Jorge. All four gave talks about George Green and Green’s Windmill before the exhibit was revealed to 30 special guests.

Visitors can now see and experiment with the exhibit during our opening hours of Wednesday to Sunday 10am-4pm. Entry is FREE so come on over and take a look for yourself!
