Field Gun in the summer ☀️
Bobsleigh in the winter ❄️

And somehow finding time to be HMS Sherwood's First Lieutenant too!

Fresh from the tarmac at HMS Collingwood as part of the Royal Naval Reserve Field Gun team, Lt Afton attended the Royal Navy Winter Sports - RNWSA Annual Reception to receive her Athlete Colours recognising "exceptional commitment and performance throughout the 2026 season" 🏅

Yesterday was all about the RNR Football Tournament at HMS Sherwood.

But not entirely.

Two of our ship's company were down at HMS Collingwood, as part of the Royal Naval Reserve team in this year's Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity Field Gun Competition.

This distinctly naval sport is a real test of fitness, physical and mental strength, teamwork and resilience.

The RNR team made it to the Plate 3 Finals and set a clean new personal best time. 💪

Well done to the entire team, and congratulations to Conor and Afton on stepping up and knuckling down to be part of it.

Today's Royal Naval Reserve 5-a-Side Football Tournament closed with our CO awarding prizes.🏆

The recipients had all been voted on by the team captains.☑️

HMS Hibernia picked up both Best Male and Best Female player awards. 👏

Ryan from RNR London racked up Most Goals Scored.

Our own PO Chris - Sherwood's team manager - was voted Best Goalkeeper. 🥅

And another of our company, OC Anna, was awarded the Golden Boot for Best Teamwork. Although she wasn't one of the players, Anna has given up her weekend to act as match medic, bartender, lunch-prepper, gazebo rigger and many other key tasks that are needed to make events like this run smoothly and enjoyable. Great RN values! 💪

And of course HMS FLYING FOX lifted the hefty Royal Navy Reserve Cup as overall winners. 🥳

The final standings were:

1️⃣ HMS Flying Fox
2️⃣ HMS Hibernia
3️⃣ RNR London (HMS President, HMS Wildfire, HMS King Alfred, HMS Ferret)
+
HMS Sherwood
5️⃣ HMS Scotia (w. HMS Dalriada)
6️⃣ HMS CALLIOPE (w. HMS Ceres)
7️⃣ HMS Cambria

So Bravo Zulu to the team from Flying Fox - Royal Naval Reserve 5-a-Side Football Tournament Champions for 2026!

All the teams played really well, got stuck in and demonstrated amazing teamwork and sportsmanship. The rankings shifted through the day and the end result was never certain until the final whistle.

Thank you to all the players who trained and travelled from far and wide, and those of HMS Sherwood's staff and ship's company who organised and supported the event.

And thank you again to the Gosling Foundation whose financial contribution made today possible.

As the teams break for lunch, it's tight at the top in the Royal Naval Reserve 5-a-Side Football Tournament.

Three teams are in equal first place in the rankings, with three wins each: HMS Hibernia, RNR London (this year a mixed HMS President, HMS Wildfire, HMS King Alfred and HMS Ferret team) and the home team, HMS Sherwood, which this year includes the Royal Marines Reserve Merseyside (Nottingham Detachment).

Well done everyone 👏.

The lunch spread today has been funded by the Gosling Foundation, and that contribution was key to making this event happen and giving everyone a quality meal and the energy for the afternoon's sport to come.

👉 Leading Hand James G is someone you can rely on to keep thing moving, leading a team providing ground services at East Midlands Airport and as a Supply Chain specialist in the Royal Naval Reserve 🛫⚓️

“Although what I actually do in a typical day in very different,” he says, “they both involve complex operations in high-pressure environments, where a lot of things have to get done in a very set amount of time, and plans can quickly change!”

James joined the Royal Naval Reserve at HMS Sherwood in November 2019, and completed initial training passing out of HMS RALEIGH in February 2021. “My experience in civilian logistics has definitely been a help in much of my work in the Logistics Branch, when it comes to customs procedures, handling dangerous goods and tracking shipments to make sure the right loads go to the right places.” says James. “As a reservist I bring that experience and understanding straight into the Royal Navy. In return, the Royal Navy has really developed my teamwork and leadership skills, as well as the famous ‘can-do’ work ethic.”

James took the opportunity for the deployment of a lifetime in 2025 as part of the Forward Logistics Team supporting Operation HIGHMAST – the Carrier Strike Group voyage around the world. “I was deployed for the whole nine months.” explains James. “Wherever the carrier group was going, we went ahead to ensure the supply chain was ready to support it. I visited Sicily, Crete, Oman, Singapore and Japan.”
“It was the highlight of my time in the RNR so far. And the best part has to be the five weeks spent in Tokyo. As well as the opportunity to visit the city, it was a great professional challenge. It was intense at the time, but very satisfying to look back on.”

That effort was not unnoticed – the CSG Forward Logistics Team that James was part of was collectively awarded the Herbert Lott Award for Efficiency at the end of 2025! 🏆

“To anyone thinking of joining the Royal Navy Reserves, I would say ‘Do it!’”, James concludes. “With so many different branches and specialisations to choose from, all of which offer world class training and qualifications, plus so many opportunities to travel the world and make some great friends along the way, you won’t regret it.” ⚓💙
