Old Nottinghamians

Old Nottinghamians Old Nottinghamians are the former students of Nottingham High School (UK) The Houses compete to win the Wheeler Cup. The current Headmaster is Mr Andrew Holman

Nottingham High School was founded in 1513 by Dame Agnes Mellers as the 'Free School', although it is not clear whether this was a new institution or a refoundation/endowment of an existing school, of which records exist as far back as 1289. There are four school 'houses; Mellers - named after the foundress; Cooper's - after Frederick Cooper (an artist who in 1872 donated almost 2 acres (8,100 m2)

of land to the school); Maples' - after Samuel Maples (a former pupil who in 1892 bequeathed £3,000 to found scholarships in his name), and White's - after Sir Thomas White (founder of St John's College, Oxford and sometime Lord Mayor of London, who endowed a charity to provide interest-free loans to 'young men of good name and thrift' in the Midlands – some money from this fund was lent to the school in slightly questionable circumstances during the middle of the 19th century).

Launched in 2025, we’re excited to be hosting our second Connect & Inspire event in London next Friday.

The event gives our students a valuable opportunity to build confidence, make connections, and network in a professional business setting.

A huge thank you to the Old Nottinghamians whose support and generosity make opportunities like this possible.

We’re looking forward to another inspiring afternoon!

The final preparations are underway as we prepare for the Geri Thomas Sports Hall Naming Ceremony, taking place on Sunday.

We thought you would enjoy seeing some photographs from the Archive reflecting his time at Nottingham High School as an Ambassador. His School tours were legendary — sharing stories, memories and experiences, and encouraging others to do the same.

We look forward to celebrating his remarkable contribution to the School community this weekend.

Old Friends, New Memories ✨

It was our pleasure to host the Class of 1966 Anniversary Reunion and the Old Friends, New Memories Reunions last weekend. Both occasions were a fitting reminder of the value of the Nottingham High School community long after leaving the School.

On Sunday, we were honoured to welcome a remarkable gathering of our community - including ONs and their family members, former staff, former parents, former governors, grandparents of current students, donors, legators, and long-standing supporters. Many had travelled considerable distances to be with us, and for some, physical challenges made the journey even more significant - yet nothing seemed to deter the determination to reconnect and share in the occasion.

There were moments of reflection too, as we fondly remembered those no longer with us - their presence was felt in the shared memories and the legacy they helped to create.

Events such as these strengthen the bonds felt across generations, reminding us of the shared experiences, values, and friendships that continue to connect our School community over time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and for making the occasion so meaningful. We look forward to repeating this event in 2027.

We are especially grateful for the support of our Headmaster, Archivist, Patron, and incoming Chair of Governors in helping make this event possible.

We are delighted to share these pictures of the memorial garden for Geri Thomas - a living, lasting tribute that reflects our School’s values.

Using plants from his own garden, it offers a personal space for reflection for generations of our School community.

As it grows and changes with the seasons, it will reflect the enduring impact of his life and legacy.

There will be an opportunity to visit the garden at the Geri Thomas Naming Ceremony, taking place on Sunday 10th May.

We look forward to welcoming the Class of 1966 back to Nottingham High School this weekend, as we begin the first in a series of forthcoming anniversary reunions.

These occasions offer a valuable opportunity to reconnect and reflect on shared experiences. We are always keen to receive photographs from Old Nottinghamians’ private collections, which help to enrich the School Archive and preserve our history.

If you have any images you would be willing to share, we would be delighted to hear from you [email protected]

One year on, we remember Geri Thomas and the lasting impact he had on the Nottingham High School community.

Geri had a way of bringing people together, breaking down barriers, and genuinely caring about creating opportunities for young people. His influence is still felt across the School today.

Today is a day to reflect and carry forward the work he believed in.

We’re looking forward to the Geri Thomas Naming Ceremony next month - you can book your place here:

Over the next couple of days, we're heading north to spend time with some of our ONs in Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Some of these friendships go back many years, and it means a great deal to us to be able to sit down together, catch up properly, and hear how life has unfolded since you left Nottingham High School. The strength of these relationships — and the affection so many of you still hold for the School and for one another — is something we never take for granted.

We know from past visits how generous ONs are with their time, their stories, and their encouragement for those who are following behind them.

If you’re nearby, we would be delighted to see you.
