Today we put the ‘air’ into National Air & Space Camp by flying the first cadets of the 2026 camp! Our day consisted of flying 24 cadets and one of the camp’s adult volunteers. It was great to be involved in this special occasion, and we hope that all cadets continue to have a great time this week!

Having flown all of the cadets, we even had time left for Sergeant Alex Newbould to complete his Advanced Glider Training. This is an achievement that Alex has been working towards and putting effort into for some time, congratulations!

Over the last 9 days, 644 VGS has successfully completed its annual Summer Course ☀️✈️

From launch failures to soaring trips, it’s been a week full of learning alongside plenty of cake and laughter. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, managing to fly every single day!

During their rest day, our trainees also had the opportunity to visit RAF Coningsby, where they learned more about the Typhoon – an awesome experience for all involved.

Course highlights:
✈️ 328 launches
⏱️ 44:02 flying hours

A huge well done to our students:
💙 12 Gliding Induction Flights completed –
earning Blue Wings
🤎 1 Bronze award to CWO Leyton Hayes – for completing the Gliding Scholarship syllabus
🩶 5 Silver wings for completing their gliding scholarships and flying solo for Cpl Isaac Kirk, Sgt Jakob Buzalski, FS James Drew-Smith, FS Liam Jones and CWO Michaela McEvoy
💛 2 Gold wings awarded to 644 VGS service instructors Flt Lt Greg Harley and Fg Off Dylan McCarthy! (We will admit that one of these was just before the course, but we still want to celebrate it!)

Delighted to reshare this fantastic achievement by Flight Staff Cadet Oliver Wright (644 VGS) and Kamil Jazwinski, who have completed a 100km ultramarathon in under 24 hours 🏔️

All in support of a fantastic cause, helping create opportunities for young people in aviation - something we’re proud to stand behind.

THEY DID IT! 🎉🏔️

Against the backdrop of the breathtaking Italian Alps, Air League Scholars, Oliver Wright and Kamil Jazwinski, have successfully completed Project Ardua: an extraordinary 100km ultramarathon in under 24 hours.

This was never going to be easy. Months of training, preparation, sacrifice and unwavering determination led to this moment. Faced with steep climbs, tough terrain, fatigue and the mental challenge of pushing far beyond their comfort zones, Oliver and Kamil showed incredible resilience every step of the way.

Inspired by Per Ardua ad Astra ("Through Adversity to the Stars"), they took on one of the toughest challenges of their lives, not for personal glory, but to give back to and help create opportunities for future generations of young people in aviation.

We are beyond proud of what they have achieved. Their commitment, courage and selflessness embody everything The Air League stands for, and we are incredibly grateful that they chose to undertake this challenge in support of our mission.

Oliver and Kamil, you've inspired us all. Thank you for proving what is possible when ambition meets determination, and for helping ensure more young people can discover their own path to the stars.

Please join us in congratulating these two outstanding young men on an exceptional achievement! 👏

Congratulations are in order for Sgt Judd Allen, who has been re-awarded his Grade 1 qualification, allowing him to resume his passenger flying!

Judd previously held his Grade 1 prior to stepping away from the VGS. We’re proud to see his return and the re-award of his Grade 1 this week. Well done, and congratulations!

This achievement goes to show the commitment of our volunteers who attend week in, week out, to enable Air Cadet gliding. Thank you!

🏆 The Results Are In 🌅

Yesterday, 644 Volunteer Gliding Squadron completed Ex AEONIC PEGASUS 2026 – our annual sunrise-to-sunset flying operation designed to maximise Gliding Induction Flight opportunities for RAF Air Cadets.

📊 By the numbers:

✈️ 164 launches completed
🧑‍✈️ 77 cadets experienced a Glider Induction Flight
🌅 First launch: 0437hrs
🌇 Last landing: 2136hrs
⏱️ 18 hours and 27 minutes of flight time

We were also supported by 692 RPAS who completed over 30 blue drone courses with cadets at Syerston yesterday too!

Behind the success of the day was a planning team of volunteers led by Flt Lt Heather Smith, who meticulously planned every detail. This allowed the team on the day to make the most out of every minute of light available. Thank you also to all of the cadets and escorting staff members who visited yesterday, we hope you enjoyed it just as much as we did!
