🚨BREAKING NEWS: Royal Mail has announced another increase to stamp prices – with first-class rising to £1.80 and second-class to 91p from 7th April.
The 10p increase to first-class (6%) and 4p increase to second-class (5%) comes despite Royal Mail being fined £21m by Ofcom in the autumn for missing its annual delivery targets – the third time the 509-year-old postal service has been penalised by the regulator.
Royal Mail's managing director of letters, Richard Travers, blamed the "continued rise in the cost of delivery for every letter," pointing to a 70% decline in letter volumes over the past 20 years while the number of delivery addresses has grown by 4 million to 32 million.
The price hike follows last year's £3.6bn takeover of Royal Mail's parent company by Czech billionaire Daniel Křetínský, after which Ofcom relaxed the universal service obligation. Royal Mail is now only required to deliver second-class post on alternate weekdays, down from six days a week.
Delivery targets have also been lowered – from next month, Royal Mail must deliver 90% of first-class mail within one working day (down from 93%) and 95% of second-class within three days (down from 98.5%).
Research earlier this year found that Royal Mail delivered Christmas letters and parcels late to approximately 16 million people.
