🚌 Don’t forget, you can now apply for school travel assistance!

There’s still plenty of time to apply for school travel assistance now that you’ve got the outcome of your secondary school admission.

We’ve had a few questions about school transport so we thought we’d answer some of the most common questions that you have.

❓ How can I apply if I don’t live in Nottinghamshire but my child is attending school or college in Nottinghamshire?
If your child is going to school or college in Nottinghamshire but you live in another area, you will need to apply for your school travel assistance within your local authority area. For example, if you live in Sherwood you will need to apply with Nottingham City Council and if you live in Long Eaton you would need to apply with Derbyshire County Council. Use the link in the comments to find your local council.

❓ What if my child had school travel assistance last year. Do I need to reapply?

No, you don’t need to reapply for school travel assistance unless there has been a change in circumstance. Unless you tell us about a change in circumstance, school travel assistance will automatically continue. A change in circumstance could be moving home address or changing school. Remember, a previous entitlement to school travel assistance doesn’t guarantee that travel will be provided in the future.

Conservative Councillor Darren Maltby, who represents Bestwood St Albans, raised issue with the potential for flooding, as well as “horrific” traffic, and poor public transport links.

“Bestwood St Albans is increasingly growing, particularly around the village area, we have no pub, no doctors, no dentist, it has got one convenience store,” he said.

“What consideration has been given towards helping getting a few more facilities locally?”

I will always look to challenge building on our green belt and work with residents.

Gedling Borough Council have been consulting on a new Housing Strategy, setting out Gedling Borough Council’s vision and priorities for housing in the Borough for the next five-year period until 2030 and the actions that will be taken to meet local need.

The Housing Strategy is an overarching document that aims to include all the aspects of the Council’s housing policy and housing related services provided directly or indirectly within the Borough. This includes planning, social housing, homelessness prevention, domestic violence, specialist housing, aids and adaptations, and the private rental market. Have your say on what you think is important in relation to housing in Gedling by completing the survey using the link below.

The consultation was due to close on the 29th March 2026 but due to some errors, I have succeeded in getting the errors corrected and got the deadline extended to the 12th April 2026.

PLEASE COMPLETE THE SURVEY.

As part of Reform's £45 million cost-cutting measures in key areas such as adult and children's services, a vital support service has now been scrapped — one that provided essential help to some of our most vulnerable residents.
The flagship Connect service in
Nottinghamshire offered short-term support, advice, and community connections to help adults aged 18+ maintain their independence. It supported people with issues ranging from health and housing to tackling isolation through social activities, working in partnership with Age UK.
Removing services like this risks leaving many without the support they rely on.
