Last chance to enjoy the bales.....☀️

We say goodbye for another year....the hay bales are being collected Thursday morning so here’s one final photo before they disappear.

Nearly time for a bit of baling....

Our favourite part of the year as we begin the baling 😍

The meadows have been mown and are currently being rowed up so the hay is in nice rows ready for baling.

Baling will start at tea time and continue into the evening, we'll let everyone know when the baling is finished 🚜

The meadows are now closed for a few days as we mow, row up and bale the hay.

🌼 Meadow closure from Saturday – annual meadow management

Our annual meadow management gets underway this Saturday morning (15 August), when mowing will begin.

For everyone’s safety, the meadows will be CLOSED from Saturday morning and will remain closed until the hay has been baled and it is safe to reopen them.

We currently expect baling to take place on Monday.

🌳 The woodland paths will remain open as usual.

Cutting the meadows in late summer and removing the cut material is an important part of looking after them. It helps keep nutrient levels low, giving wildflowers a better chance to thrive rather than being crowded out by vigorous grasses, and prepares the meadows for sheep grazing later in the year.

There are quite a few moving parts this year – four contractors and five stages covering mowing, rowing up, baling, collecting the bales and transporting them off site – so we’d ask for a little patience if everything doesn’t happen quite as quickly as planned.

We’ll keep the closure as short as possible and reopen the meadows as soon as the work allows.

Please follow the signs and don’t enter the meadows while they are closed.

🔥 Help us protect Gedling House Woods & Meadows during the hot weather

The recent spell of hot, dry weather has left our meadows and woodland much drier than usual, increasing the risk of fire.

Today, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident following a number of large outdoor fires across the county. This means emergency services are under increased pressure, so we’d all be grateful if everyone could help reduce the risk.

If you’re visiting the woods and meadows, please:
🚭 Make sure ci******es are completely extinguished and disposed of responsibly – please don’t drop cigarette ends on the ground.
🚮 Use the litter bin by the entrance or take your litter home with you.
🔥 Never light barbecues, campfires or disposable BBQs on the reserve.
👀 If you see anyone acting unsafely, or if you spot smoke or a fire, call 999 immediately.

We’ve also placed temporary signs at the entrances to remind visitors to take extra care while these conditions continue.

Thank you to everyone who helps look after this special place. A little extra care now can help protect our woods, meadows, wildlife and the people who enjoy them.

What a butterfly bonanza we've enjoyed across the meadows and woods over the past few weeks! 🦋

A huge thank you to Colin Bradwin for capturing some stunning photos. It's been fantastic to see so many beautiful butterflies, and Colin's images really showcase them at their best.

We've covered the entire notice board on Wood Lane with these amazing butterfly photos, so if you'd like to admire these beauties up close, be sure to stop by and take a look.

A little update from Meadow 3. 🌼

It's hard to believe these photos were taken exactly one month apart—17th June and 17th July.

Lush greens and wildflowers just 4 weeks ago, now golden grasses in midsummer with the heatwave in-between.

Still looking beautiful in any season though a bit dry 🌼🍂🌟.

ALL WORK COMPLETE PATHS NOW OPEN

Tree Works Thursday 16th July

Thank you to everyone who has reported fallen trees over the last few weeks. All day Thursday we'll have specialist tree surgeons in the woods addressing a split tree near Colliery Way and the fallen tree branches on the path at the top of meadow 3.

Please avoid the path from Yew Tree Lane Entrance alongside Colliery Way/Gedling Access Road as it will be inaccessible, safety measures will be in place by the contractors but we want to make sure all dogs and owners are safe.

We'll update when all the work is complete.

Where better to stay cool?

To stay cool and shady our Saturday volunteers decided to give Yew Tree Lane entrance a little TLC this morning.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped to say hello and share such kind words as you passed by – the kind comments really are appreciated.

We also loved seeing so many dogs and their owners enjoying the cool of the woods 💚.
