🎧 Lighthearted listening for lighthouse lovers

Whilst we have our own ALK Keeping Watch podcast, this week we’re heading further afield to the United States Lighthouse Society podcast.

The Light Hearted Lite podcast revisits a memorable interview with the late Ian Duff. First heard in Episode 79 back in September 2020, this newly edited version—shared in February 2025—offers a wonderful opportunity to hear Ian’s stories once again.

Ian served as a keeper at 13 Scottish lighthouses between 1976 and 1992, including around five years at the remote Skerryvore Lighthouse and a similar spell at Duncansby Head Lighthouse, perched at the most northeasterly tip of mainland Britain. His reflections bring to life the challenges and quiet rewards of lighthouse service in some of the UK’s most dramatic locations.

Following his time as a keeper, Ian remained deeply involved in the lighthouse community as President of the Association of Lighthouse Keepers. After his passing, his legacy continued with the donation of his photographic slides and artefacts to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses—a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to preserving lighthouse heritage.
