RAF Odiham HIVE

RAF Odiham HIVE The HIVE is an information network available to all members of the service community, serving both married and single personnel, together with their families.

RAF Odiham is home to the United Kingdom’s Chinook Force and JSFAW and is situated approximately 2 ½ miles from J5 on the south side of the M3. Odiham, a particularly attractive village, is located north-east of the airfield, and has a good selection of shops, as well as a sub-post office and branches of Lloyds and Barclays banks. The nearest towns are Farnham and Basingstoke. Farnham is an histor

ic town with a twelfth century castle with a good choice of shops, restaurants and arts and crafts. Basingstoke is situated to the north-west and has a large shopping centre as well as a leisure centre (with ice rink, swimming pool, bowling alley, sports centre, bingo hall and cinema complex), and a large Sainsbury, Tesco, Morrison’s and Asda supermarkets. There are four Service Families Accommodation areas associated with RAF Odiham: Burghfield is located 20 miles away on the outskirts of Reading, Church Crookham is located 7 miles away near to Fleet, Alton again is located 7 miles away to the south of Odiham and there are also quarters located just outside the main gates to RAF Odiham. The Single Living Accommodation is located on the station. Both Odiham and Church Crookham have a bus service which connects with the nearest train stations of Hook and Fleet. The Hook and Fleet train stations are on the Waterloo line and regularly travel into London and to Southampton. Alton SFA is within walking distance of the train station, which again has trains to London and the south. Burghfield has a bus service to the nearest town of Reading, which has bus and train services to all the major towns and cities. Odiham is 11/2 hours from Gatwick Airport and 40 minutes from Southampton Airport.

Project SALICE addresses practical obstacles faced by UK personnel and their families serving in NATO Command and Force structures – underpinning the Government’s 'NATO First' approach.
When a soldier, sailor or aviator is posted overseas for NATO, their family often goes with them. Their partner may have to give up their job, and their children may need new schools. Life must be rebuilt in a new country.
‘NATO First’ is not just a commitment made in policy documents, but the guiding principle for all our military plans and activities – and Project SALICE is here to address the challenges that can arise with an international move and to support families serving with NATO overseas.
Expanding on issues and recommendations covered in recent reviews of overseas Service life, the Project SALICE initiative is part of a broader commitment to make military life work, for those who serve – and for the families who serve alongside them. It builds on the Armed Forces Offer, which includes competitive pay, healthcare, accommodation support and funded childcare.
Lieutenant General Eldon Millar, the UK's Military Representative to NATO and the EU and Project SALICE sponsor, said:
“The UK is one of NATO's strongest members. Our Armed Forces work every day alongside allies to keep our country and Europe safe – with the right people, in the right places, at the right time.
“But keeping the best people in our Armed Forces doesn't depend only on good training and kit. It depends on Service life being a good life, for the whole family – and that is the purpose of Project SALICE.
“When our people know that their families are settled, their partners have every opportunity to work, and the practical side of overseas life is manageable, they can focus on their mission – being ready to deter, fight and win.”
The project covers: partner employment, education, accommodation, career management, policies and processes, and the Armed Forces Covenant.
Partner employment
Finding a job in another country isn't easy. Rules vary everywhere, and red tape often makes it extremely hard for partners of Service personnel to work at all.
Right now, particular attention is being focused on tackling these barriers to partner employment, and the Project SALICE team is tackling this in three ways:
1. New guides – explaining the work rules for partners in every EU country: these will be available later this summer on GOV.UK. Where rules are unfair or unclear, the team is pushing for change – talks are already under way with Italy and Denmark.
2. Support for partners in specific professions – the team is looking at what more can be done to support partners who work in healthcare, and other professions will also be considered over the coming months.
3. Changing things at home – International Remote Working (IRW) policies are being reviewed across Government departments. While most departments now have IRW policies in place, approaches vary in how they work in practice. In collaboration with the Government People Group, Defence is therefore undertaking a cross-government exercise to gather and compare IRW policies.
Wider changes...
Armed Forces People Policy (AFPP) and Armed Forces Remuneration Policy (AF Rem) teams have already made improvements to allowances, processes and provisions.
These include:
• Simpler moving costs: The Global Mobility Allowance trial provides an alternative to separate payments, with lump sums at the start and end of a posting. The Disturbance Expense rate on return has also been increased to match what you receive when you go overseas.
• Easier trips home: Following a successful trial in Belgium, the European Commuting Allowance became permanent policy in October 2025 and now covers the whole of Europe. If you have a home in the UK and are posted to an eligible European location, you can claim up to two trips home each month. This also gives married personnel and those in civil partnerships the choice to serve unaccompanied.
• Funded childcare overseas: Since September 2025, eligible working families can claim for up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week – the same as families in England – for children aged nine months to school age, during term time.
• Before and after school childcare: The new Primary School Aged Childcare Overseas (PSACO) allowance enables eligible families to claim back the cost of up to 20 hours of before and after school childcare during term time, for children aged four to eleven. This is available in overseas locations where it is not possible to claim Wraparound Childcare allowance.
• Less admin for Senior Non-Commissioned ranks: Travel delegations have been increased to reduce unnecessary paperwork.
• A new career management initiative: This aims to attract highly skilled volunteers to NATO posts, develop their NATO experience, re-invest their experience back into the UK, and help them stand out as strong candidates for more senior NATO roles.
Coming soon: an app to help you plan your posting
A new Overseas Location App is being built by the Global Support Organisation Digital Team to help you find out what life could look like for your whole family, before choosing your next overseas posting. This will cover partner work rules, schooling options and childcare in Europe and Türkiye – based on your own circumstances. The app is expected to be ready for first tests in the autumn.

Service Family Accommodation (SFA) Communications Update _09 June 2026

Interim Chair of Defence Housing Service

The Defence Housing Strategy, announced in November 2025, marks the most significant transformation of Armed Forces housing in more than 50 years. It sets out an ambitious, fully funded ten-year programme to improve the homes and communities that service personnel and their families rely on every day. At the heart of this generational renewal, is the creation of a standalone professional Defence housing organisation, the Defence Housing Service.

Leading this transition is Natalie Elphicke Ross OBE, who has been appointed Interim Chair of the Defence Housing Service. Natalie previously chaired the Defence Housing Strategy Review Team and will play a crucial role in leading the transition to the new organisation, ensuring it is ready to deliver for you and your families from day one.

Once formally established in law through the Armed Forces Bill, the Defence Housing Service will take responsibility for managing nearly 50,000 military homes across the UK. Its mission includes providing safe, high-quality, and reliable housing that reflects modern military life.

Natalie’s appointment comes as the latest polling data collected by Opinion Research Services shows a rise in satisfaction among Personnel and families living in military homes.

🏘 DIO Service Family Accommodation (SFA) Communications Update 29th May
🏠HomeHub
Following the recent downtime, there has been some updates on how you access HomeHub and an extra security step has been added. This means you may be asked by GOV.UK One Login to prove your identity when you log in. You may have already done this when using other government services, such as:
• Renewing a passport
• Updating a driving licence
• Using some HMRC services
What this means for you
• If you’ve already proved your identity, you don’t need to do anything. Your details are saved by GOV.UK One Login and will be recognised when you log in to HomeHub.
• If you haven’t proved your identity to GOV.UK One Login yet, you’ll be asked to do this the next time you log in.
How to prove your identity
You only need to do this once and can do so in one of three ways:
• Using the GOV.UK One Login app
• Answering security questions online
• Going to a Post Office
What you can use will depend on your device and the ID you have. For step-by-step help, click here.
Please note, Pinnacle does not verify your identity and does not receive or store any of your information. Your identity is checked by GOV.UK OneLogin, which securely validates and stores your details.
Summer safety guidance
Summer is just around the corner, and we want to share with you some of our best tips to keep you, your family and your home safe while enjoying the sunshine.
🪟Check your window restrictors
As it gets warmer, it may be tempting to open windows wide to let in a cool breeze. However, there is a risk of children or vulnerable adults falling from open windows and being injured if restrictors are not engaged. Please do not remove your window restrictors and ensure they are operating correctly. They should not allow the window to open further than 100mm when engaged. If they are missing, or not working, please contact Pinnacle to get this remedied.
🔥Practice BBQ safety
BBQs should be in a well-ventilated outdoors space, away from flammable objects like fences, sheds and shrubs. If you have a gas BBQ, make sure the gas bottle is turned off and removed safely. If you use a disposable BBQ (or coals), do not throw it away until it has cooled down completely.
🌿Keep your garden tidy
Create a safer space for your children to play by keeping your garden well maintained over summer. Regularly mow lawns and clear litter, food and pet waste to discourage pests and remove trip hazards. For any larger jobs that present a safety risk, such as unstable trees, contact Pinnacle.
☎If you require any further advice, please contact your local Housing Officer or Pinnacle at 0800 031 8628.
You can also find more summer safety tips on the Pinnacle website link in comments 👇

Ministerial visit to Woolwich
Families living at Woolwich Barracks recently welcomed Defence Secretary John Healey MP and local MP and Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook, who visited the site to see first-hand the improvements being made to SFA.
The properties visited have been refurbished recently as part of a £10 million investment to Woolwich. This includes refurbishments to 130 homes, ahead of the return of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment from deployment in Cyprus.
Read more about it on Defence Homes https://defencehomes.mod.gov.uk/
AFCAS results
Yesterday the results of the 2026 Armed Forces Continuous Attitude Survey (AFCAS) were released. We are pleased to see that satisfaction with the overall standard of SFA has improved slightly since last year at 52%. Satisfaction with responses to requests for repairs and maintenance works within SFA has also increased for the third year in a row to 39%, an increase of 5%.
This year’s results are encouraging, but we know there is more to do and work to reshape, redevelop and modernise the Defence housing estate is already being driven forward through the Defence Housing Strategy.
