Calling out to 13-17 year olds!

Okehampton Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) are looking for new cadets to join the unit when we hope to resume sessions in September/October.

The Volunteer Police Cadets is the nationally recognised police uniformed youth group throughout the UK. The purpose of the VPC is not to recruit police officers of the future, but to encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship amongst its members. We believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive regardless of his or her background. We encourage young people from all backgrounds to join the VPC, including those who may be vulnerable to the influences of crime and social exclusion.

The Aims of the VPC are:-
* To promote a practical understanding of policing amongst all young people.
* To encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship.
* To support local policing priorities through volunteering and give young people a chance to be heard.
* To inspire young people to participate positively in their communities.

To achieve this; cadets take part in team activities, attend local events to promote community engagement, volunteer their time to support individuals and communities, develop their knowledge & understanding of public services, through classroom inputs & visits and get an insight into the world of policing, by speaking to and seeing Police Officers and staff.

Oke VPC meets on a Thursday evening between 18:30 and 20:30 at Okehampton Police Station.

Visit www.vpc.police.uk for more information.

Email [email protected] for an application form as currently the VPC website is not accepting new applicants.

Joining the Volunteer Police Cadets is a great way to develop your volunteering and leadership skills to support yourself and the community.

Cadets last night took part in some classroom inputs around 10 point person descriptions, learning how to accurately describe someone such as a missing person, enabling them to be able to accurately identify the right person. We also covered the Police rank structure and the Code of Ethics, where cadets looked at what they thought was a behaviour or a personal trait/belief and how these fall into the Standards of Professional Behaviour or into the Policing Principles.

Okehampton VPC took a trip to River’s Edge Court residential home yesterday to meet some of the residents and talk to them, providing crime prevention advice. We were joined by PC Wilson from Okehampton Police and Percy from Citizens in Policing.

Cadets had made their own leaflets and used corresponding leaflets made by Devon & Cornwall Police, providing advice around:

- Contacting the police (such as 999, 101 and webchat services available through www.dc.police.uk)
- Fraud; the different types of fraud and how to report it to Action Fraud (www.actionfraud.police.uk)
- Devon & Cornwall Alert; the 2 way community messaging system available (www.alerts.dc.police.uk)
