Now the bonfire period festivities have finished, we know some of you will be crimbo crazy and already getting your trees up!

💡 Before putting your lights up, make sure you give them a good check over. Check none of the cables or plugs are damaged and replace any bulbs. If in doubt, chuck them out (recycle them)!

📴 Turn off and unplug any Christmas lights when you're not in or asleep in bed.

🎄 If you have a real tree, keep it watered. The video below shows a dried out tree that goes up in seconds!

🔔 Already got the ladder out to get the decs down from the loft? Check your smoke alarms while they're out!

CAR SEAT SAFETY! 👶🏻🚗

West Yorkshire Combined Authority are running partnership events with Good Egg Safety CIC to check baby/child car seat fitting for FREE!

It's all part of the Vision Zero campaign, to eliminate all road traffic deaths and serious injuries.

As the leaves and temperature start to drop, cosy nights in by the fire are calling! 🔥

Tonight we've been training putting out chimney fires by using some hard suction hose to simulate a chimney/flue, getting the chimney rods out and discussing the different methods of extinguishing and challenges with these types of fires.

As with most things, prevention is better than the cure! Before you start lighting fires this year, get your chimney swept. This will clear out any birds nests, debris and sap/tar/soot from the previous year and reduce the risk of a fire. Use well seasoned or kiln dried wood. Have a carbon monoxide detector in the same room.

Surprise View, Otley Chevin

Last night we got called out to a fire on Otley Chevin in the heathland area at Surprise View. When we arrived, this was about 20m x 20m, with flames 2 metres high in places.

The fire was about 350 metres from the fire engine, so crews started running hose and made up for an extra two fire engines (Rawdon and Shipley).

By this time, the fire had spread to 50 metres wide. We used some beaters, 2 hoses and about 30,000 litres of water to put out the fire.

The cause of a fire like this can be hard to determine, but the most likely cause is this discarded glass bottle found at the centre of the fire.

Enjoy our fantastic green spaces and the amazing weather, but please do not have fires and BBQs where prohibited and take your rubbish home.
