We want to hear your experiences of health and adult social care..

As we move towards the new West Surrey Council, which formally vests on 1st April 2027, one of the areas we must get right is Adult Social Care and Health. This work will shape services across the West Surrey area going forward.

Councillor Ellen Nicholson, Shadow Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health, has asked councillors across the future West Surrey area to speak directly to residents and find out about the issues people are actually facing.

It is really important to me that we hear from you. Reports and statistics tell us a lot, but they do not always show the everyday reality for residents, families and carers.

I would greatly value your feedback if you have experience of:

- Waiting too long for care, assessments or support
- Difficulty accessing mental health services
- Problems with community health services
- A lack of support for unpaid or family carers
- Concerns around adult safeguarding
- Any other challenges relating to adult social care or health services

This could be something you have experienced personally, or something affecting a family member, friend or neighbour.
Please feel free to comment below or send me a private message. If you would prefer to discuss something confidentially, please get in touch with me directly. For more complex or ongoing issues, Councillor Ellen Nicholson is also happy to meet with residents, in person or via Teams, to hear your experiences in more detail.

All feedback I receive will be passed on and used to help shape services as we develop them for the new council.

This is a real opportunity to tell us what works well, what does not work, and what needs to change. The more experiences we hear about, the clearer the picture we can build, and the better chance we have of getting these services right from the start.

The weather's looking to be exceptionally hot later this week, so please put your bins out the night before as our crews are likely to start earlier than usual.

This week, one of our refuse vehicles caught fire after a lithium battery was placed in household waste. Please never put lithium batteries in your household rubbish bin – recycle them at a designated collection point instead.

⚠️ PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE – FIRE RISK 🔥

With the current very dry conditions, concerns have been raised about the recreational use of fireworks and the increased risk of accidentally starting fires.

Dry grass and vegetation can ignite extremely quickly, potentially putting homes, wildlife, our green spaces and, most importantly, people at risk.

I’m asking residents across Ottershaw and Runnymede to please think carefully before using fireworks during these conditions, particularly anywhere near dry grassland, woodland or open spaces.

I have also asked fellow Runnymede councillors to help spread this important safety message across their communities.

Please stay safe, be responsible and help protect our community. 🔥🌳

Despite being unable to attend Council meetings, she remains committed to her residents and continues handling casework from home. Granting this dispensation is the fair and compassionate decision, allowing her time to recuperate while continuing to serve her community.

Please watch my speech in support of this important motion on housing in Runnymede.

We need more homes, especially for local families and young people, but development must be in the right places and supported by roads, schools, healthcare, drainage, flood protection, public transport and other essential services.

Housing growth must be fair, realistic and shaped by the communities who will live with its consequences.

I’ve been reflecting on the way things are progressing within the new West Surrey Shadow Authority, and I have to say I’m concerned.

Time and again, it feels as though attempts to properly scrutinise decisions are being blocked. Whether it’s raising motions, asking questions, or seeking greater accountability, it often feels like barriers are being put in the way rather than encouraging open and transparent debate.

At the Standards Committee, I requested a recorded vote so that residents could clearly see how members voted on an issue. However, under the current arrangements, a recorded vote requires the support of more than 10 members. On a committee of only 11 or 12 members, that creates a very high threshold. When the request was not supported, it reinforced my concern that residents are not always able to see how decisions are being made.

I’m also disappointed that arrangements for public petitions and wider public participation are not due to be introduced until December. At such a significant moment, while the new West Surrey Council is being established, I believe residents should be able to engage with and influence the process as early as possible, not months down the line.

I’m equally concerned about the level of power being concentrated within the Executive. Strong local government depends on robust scrutiny, transparency and accountability, and it’s important that these principles remain at the heart of the new authority.

I was elected to represent my residents, ask difficult questions, and hold those in power to account. That is exactly what I will continue to do. I won’t stop pushing for greater transparency, stronger democratic processes, and more opportunities for residents to have their voices heard.

Politics should never be about making it harder for scrutiny to happen. It should be about openness, accountability, and ensuring that every decision is made in the best interests of the people we serve.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support and engage with this work. I will keep fighting for a more transparent, accountable and democratic West Surrey.

My Speech below in support of a motion brought to Council last Thursaday re: the need for more homes in Runnymede borough, particularly for local families, young people and those wishing to remain in the borough. However, this Council also recognises concern among residents about the proposed increase in housing numbers in Runnymede borough which could be built in the wrong places without the necessary infrastructure.

"I want to be clear from the outset: this is not about opposing new homes. We all recognise that people need somewhere to live. Our young people deserve the opportunity to remain in the communities where they grew up, families need affordable housing, and we have a responsibility to plan for the future.
However, housing must be planned properly.

Over recent years, some parts of our borough have shouldered a disproportionate amount of development. Many residents in those communities feel they have been asked to accept estate after estate, while the supporting infrastructure has simply not kept pace. Roads are becoming increasingly congested, GP surgeries and dental services are under pressure, schools are reaching capacity, and concerns remain about drainage, flooding and the impact on our local environment.

Residents are not saying “don’t build.” They are saying, “build sensibly, build fairly, and make sure the infrastructure comes first.”

As councillors, we have a duty to ensure that growth is sustainable and that no single community is expected to carry an unfair share of the burden. We also have a duty to stand up for local democratic accountability. Decisions that fundamentally change the character of our communities should be informed by local knowledge and supported by evidence, not simply driven by housing numbers.

We therefore welcome the request for a detailed report on the legal options, infrastructure implications and deliverability of these housing targets before any new Local Plan timetable is progressed. That is a sensible and responsible approach.
We also support writing to the Secretary of State to make clear that housing targets cannot be considered in isolation. Homes and infrastructure must go hand in hand.

For the sake of our existing residents, future residents and the long-term sustainability of our borough, our group are pleased to support this motion."
