The North Oxford Social Group is changing location.

We have changed the location from the Common Ground Cafe to The Café at the Schwarzman Centre. The group will still be meeting from 10 am - 11:30 am on the first Thursday of every month. We had our first meeting there yesterday as a trial, and are now happy to confirm the location change. Our next meetings are on the 1st October and 5th November.

We hope to see you there!

Another week, another Didcot Green Walk. This time around, we went for a huge 2.5 mile walk around Lady Grove Park, taking us just over an hour, and managing around 8,000 steps. It was a lovely walk taking us to the lake and waterways, through the grasslands and back. We were also joined by Bailey the guide dog. We were also blessed with some rain to finish off which we of course embraced. It is great to see the impact of these walks, with our distances increasing all the time as we get more confident walking in nature.

What do the new iOS27 accessibility features mean for sight loss?

Apple’s next major iPhone update, iOS 27, is arriving this autumn. Jamie has spent the past few weeks testing the beta version and looking closely at how the new iOS 27 accessibility features will support people with sight loss.

Some key features:
- More detailed image descriptions in VoiceOver.
- New ways to ask the Magnifier app about physical objects and documents.
- Layout and reading improvements in Accessibility Reader.
- Natural speech commands in Voice Control.

We hope you have all had a good week, we certainly did. Our Faringdon group had their audio cinema, where we watched Song Sung Blue, a film about the life of Neil Diamond. This went down very well indeed with most of our members singing along and tapping their feet to the nostalgic music. Thank you to Billie for helping us and hosting us at the Corn Exchange.

Our Abingdon and Henley groups were both joined by Touchable World who brought prototypes of gadgets and canes that can help blind and visually impaired people get around. these gadgets can detect objects up to 20 metres away. Our members got to try them out for themselves too. Thank you Matt, Krish and Steve for demonstrating these.

Banbury SocialEyes 5th anniversary.

Banbury SocialEyes reached an important milestone this summer as we celebrated the groups 5th anniversary. The group was first set up in 2021 and has grown to 32 members.

The party at The Butcher’s Arms in Kings Sutton was very entertaining with live music from Tom and Helen, a game of Aunt Sally, a BBQ and a wonderful selection of homemade cakes.

Thank you to everyone who came and who has supported the group along the way, including: Banbury Rotary, Banbury Charities, The Mill and Tooley’s, as well as all the volunteers for their tireless support.

Join us on the 3rd September at the Wheatley Social Group where we will be joined by Wiltshire Farm Foods. They will be bringing some hot and cold dishes for us to try as well as telling us about what they do. This will be a fun and tasty catch up and everyone is welcome.

The money raised will go a long way funding our services like Green Walks, Social Groups, CYP activities and Tech Training, supporting blind and visually impaired people gain independence and reducing social isolation.

Rousham House 2026!

We visited Rousham House last week and despite the very hot weather it was a fabulous day. The history of the house was fascinating, especially being a private house staying in the same family since 1635. We managed to find a shady spot under a Mulberry tree in the garden for our picnic, and the mulberries were delicious. The gardens are spectacular, a variety of landscape gardens flowing down to the river, as well as formal gardens. No wonder it is one of Monty Don's favourites. The longhorn cattle were enjoying the cool river, but it's a shame we didn't have a paddle too!
