Dovetail Fire Doors Ltd is getting busy, and weโ€™re looking for a skilled, self-employed carpenter to help us out on an ad-hoc basis.

This isn't a full-time role, itโ€™s strictly on a job-by-job basis. Itโ€™s perfect if you already run your own jobs but want to fill gaps in your diary with solid, reliable price-work or day rates.

The Work:
โ€ข Installing flat entrance fire doors (full frames and leaves).
โ€ข Remedial works (adjusting door margins, stops, hinges, thresholds).
โ€ข Working to strict fire safety compliance (if you don't know the 3mm gap rule, this isn't for you).
โ€ข Documenting your work: Taking clear, step-by-step photos of hidden elements (intumescent pads, hinges, gaps) using your smartphone for our Dashpivot compliance app.

What We Need:
โ€ข CIS Registered (Self-employed).
โ€ข Your own van and tools (110v/cordless) and a good quality smartphone camera.
โ€ข Public Liability Insurance.
โ€ข An eye for detail and process. Fire doors are life-saving equipment, so near enough is not good enough, and if there is no photo, the job didn't happen.

We supply all the materials and the hardware; you just supply the skilled labour and follow the photo checklist. Good rates paid promptly upon job sign-off.

At Dovetail Fire Doors Ltd, weโ€™ve been carrying out a lot of site surveys recently across Devon, and weโ€™ve noticed a worrying trend: missing graphite intumescent pads behind door hinges.

To the untrained eye, itโ€™s just a "little black pad." But in a fire, its absence can be the difference between a door holding firm or failing completely.

Heat Transfer: Metal hinges are excellent conductors of heat. During a fire, that heat transfers directly through the hinge and into the timber frame.
The Danger: Without protection, the timber behind the hinge chars and burns away. This causes the screws to lose their grip, and the entire fire door can drop or fail long before it's supposed to.
