Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), Wills and the Court of Protection has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

New report – Kinship Carers: How they experience their role in the family

This week (5-11 October) is Kinship Care Week, a campaign to celebrate the incredible role that kinship carers play in children’s lives and to raise awareness of what life is like for kinship families. Kinship care is when a child lives with and is cared for by a relative or someone else who has a close relationship with them, because their parents are unable to care for them.

For Kinship Care Week 2026, Dr Lindsay Reid, Adfam’s Kinship Care Support and Development Coordinator, has published a comprehensive new research study exploring the experiences of kinship carers who care for their grandchildren because of their child’s drug or alcohol use.

The study addresses an important gap in existing research by focusing specifically on the experiences of this group of kinship carers. It explores how they understand and navigate their role within the family, as well as the emotional impact of maintaining a relationship with their child who uses drugs or alcohol while simultaneously caring for their grandchildren.

The research also examines how kinship carers approach parenting their grandchildren when they feel they may not have experienced positive parenting themselves. It considers the challenges they face, the support they need, and what more could be done to improve their circumstances and provide better support for them and their families.

Alongside the full research report, Dr Lindsay Reid has published a summary article highlighting the key findings and assessing their implications for policy and practice.

The Alcohol and Families Alliance (AFA) is also running a short online survey to gather further evidence on the experiences of kinship families affected by substance use, in order to strengthen its evidence base to communicate what needs to change to better support these kinship families.

Free workshops for kinship carers

Adfam is working with Kinship to provide free online workshops for kinship carers, on understanding the effects of drug and alcohol use on kinship families.

These workshops are open to all kinship carers living in England whose families have been affected by substance use, or who want to learn where to get support around this topic. They are also an opportunity to meet other kinship carers, connect and learn together.
