01 July 1916. On this 110th Anniversary of the 1st day of the Battle of the Somme, we remember George Thomson former employee of Anchor Mill who was killed in action on this day in 1916.

George was a clerk in the Counting House and served with 17th Batt. Light Infantry.

At 07.30 on 1 July 1916, officers blew their whistles. Roughly 100,000 British soldiers climbed out of their trenches and began walking across no man's land in straight lines, weighed down by heavy equipment.

By the end of the first day, the British Army suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 dead. Most of these men were slaughtered within the first hour.

Today we remember George and all those who lost their lives in military campaigns throughout the years.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

We were delighted to receive this fabulous Corgi model of a Paisley & District Omnibus Co. Ltd. double decker bus as part of a larger donation kindly gifted to the museum byRichard Vassie

The beautifully detailed model advertises Clark’s Anchor Crochet Cotton, a famous Paisley made product from J & J Clark

This particular model is a Corgi “Public Transport” die-cast replica of a Guy Arab double decker bus, a type commonly seen on British roads during the 1940s and 1950s. The Paisley & District Omnibus Company served the local community for many decades before becoming part of Western SMT in the 1960s.

The bus has now reached its final stop and taken pride of place in our Childhood Cabinet.

Thanks again Richard for you kind donation
