Crichton Castle and Glen

Crichton Castle and Glen A hidden gem, Crichton Castle stands tucked away out of sight, perched above a dramatic valley of the River Tyne, south of Edinburgh.

It was a noble residence for some 200 years, from the late 14th century through to the close of the 16th century. It receives thousands of visitors each year, from all over the world and is renowned not only for its historical importance, but for its dramatic setting, which has remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

The security fencing which has been erected along the Castle's walls for stonework inspection mean that it is closed inside, to visitors. But it is still a beautiful walk past the gorse in full bloom to the castle grounds, which are not affected - and there is no charge!

There is no notice in the car park, which is an oversight by Historic Environment Scotland, but here is the official information:

"Due to restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while we undertake high level masonry inspections, there is currently no visitor access inside the castle or stables. The grounds are accessible."

Here are a few photos of the castle taken this afternoon. Breathtaking as ever.

The castle, in the gloaming, tonight.
Those walls have seen centuries of drama and intrigue since it was built in the 1300s... a good and grounding reminder that these days too, will simply become history and this magnificent glen, with its proud sentinel, will still be here, long after we're gone.

The old Kirk yard at Crichton is aglow with cherry blossom right now, the cherry trees heavily laden and a thick carpet of pink underfoot - an unimaginable lushness this year!

The beautiful, characterful hedgerows, a habitat for much of the local bird population and wildlife around the conservation area of Crichton village and the Castle and a big part of what makes Crichton so special, are being ripped up, senselessly, by the local landowner. There seems to be no apparent need for this, the beautiful rosa rugosa, hawthorns and beech being in remarkable shape, having been maintained and enjoyed by so many here for years. Those of us who love this special place are heartbroken.
