Towcester Improvement works

We’re writing to inform you of some upcoming temporary signage and footpath clearance works on the A5 at Towcester. The signage work is to support the completion of the new Towcester Relief Road, which has been delivered by Persimmon Homes, to connect the A5 and A43.

When will this work take place?

We’ll work overnight, between 8pm and 6am, during the week commencing Monday 4 May 2026.

Our works will be completed under mobile closures and temporary two-way traffic lights.

Introduction of a 7.5 tonne weight restriction

The weight limit will be introduced under a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) which will prevent vehicles over 7.5 tonnes from travelling through Towcester on the A5, reducing noise, improving air quality and creating a safer, more welcoming environment in the town centre.

From Tuesday 5 May 2026, we’ll begin to place signage to clearly direct drivers to use the new link road. For more details, visit our website at https://nationalhighways.co.uk/our-roads/east-midlands/a5-towcester-improvements/.

This TTRO forms part of wider improvement work we’re developing for the A5 through Towcester which includes the introduction of new signage, shared-use paths for pedestrians and cyclists, new controlled crossing points along the A5 and resurfacing.

What does this mean for you?

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

We’d also like to apologise for any inconvenience or disruption to those living close to our work. We’ll make every effort to carefully manage noise levels and additional lighting to minimise the impact.
