Car Park open 9am - 5pm. The woods are run and maintained by The Penllergare Trust. Charity no: 1082128 On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away f

rom the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you’ll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape. It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn – a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today, it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all. We are proud to have achieved the following awards:

To wrap up our series, it's time for the ultimate heavy hitter of the plant world. Today’s final contender in our Penllergare Top Trumps series is the notorious Japanese Knotweed! 🎋

On the positive side, it provides a great late-summer feast for local pollinators when other flowers have faded. The downside? Its relentless root system can grow metres deep, damaging riverbanks and completely outcompeting every native plant in its path. 🛑🌿

💔 Heartbreaking to see.

It is incredibly upsetting to find the waterfall treated like this.

Leaving rubbish behind creates unnecessary work for our volunteers, who give up their free time to care for the woods. We don’t have bins on site because we are a small charity and simply cannot afford the ever-rising cost of waste collections.

Please respect our beautiful woods. If you bring it with you, take it home.

As we near the end of our Penllergare Top Trumps series, it's time for the infamous Rhododendron. While its vibrant purple blooms are undeniably beautiful in the spring, this Victorian garden favorite is a real bully! 🌺

It grows so densely that it blocks out all the sunlight from the woodland floor, completely wiping out native bluebells and stopping new tree seedlings from growing. 🌸😈

Next up, we’re looking at our lakes and rivers with Parrot's Feather—so named because its bright green leaves look just like tropical parrot feathers! 🪶

On the plus side, its "ten thousand leaves" (the meaning of its scientific name, Myriophyllum) look beautiful and offer great cover for tadpoles when it first arrives. The catch? It grows at a terrifying pace, forming dense, tangled mats that block out sunlight, drop oxygen levels, and suffocate native pond life. 💦🦜

Next up in our Penllergare Top Trumps series is Cherry Laurel. It looks like a harmless garden hedge, but it’s a real threat to our woodland! 🌿

Its thick, glossy evergreen leaves look lovely all year round and provide sturdy shelter for birds in winter. However, it spreads rapidly and its leaves contain cyanide, creating a dark, toxic understory where native ancient woodland plants simply cannot grow.

🌿 It’s Invasive Species Week, and we’re looking at some of the eco-invaders keeping our volunteer teams busy! First up in our Penllergare Top Trumps series is Himalayan balsam.

While its explosive seed pods are an impressive bit of natural engineering, and loved by our local bees, this plant is a major headache for our ecosystem. 🌸🐝

It aggressively chokes our riverbanks, pushing out native woodland plants and leaving the soil bare and prone to erosion when it dies back in winter.

Our kitchen gets incredibly hot during a heatwave, so to keep our amazing team safe and comfortable, we are running a REDUCED MENU this Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (June 23, 24 & 25).

We will only be serving cold food and drinks on these days. Thank you so much for your understanding and for helping us look after our staff. Cool down with a refreshing drink and a cold bite instead! 🥗🥤
