M6 Northbound Overnight Closure This Sunday.

Nation Highways have informed us this morning that they are planning to close the northbound carriageway of the M6 between J39 & J40 on Sunday night (14th June).

The closure is to enable National Highways to carry out alterations to the traffic management set up for the Clifton Rail Bridge and Lowther Bridge works.

The full Northbound closure will be in place between 22:00hrs Sunday night through until 05:00hrs, Monday morning.

Northbound traffic will be diverted off the M6 at Junction 39 (Shap) along the A6 to Kemplay roundabout onto the A66 to rejoin the M6 at Junction 40.

The Clifton Rail Bridge Works are expected to be completed by August 2026 with the Lowther Bridge works expected to continue into Spring 2027.

National Highways have apologised for the short notice of the closure.

The council has been made aware the 30mph speed signage at the North end of Clifton have again been tampered with and reversed.

Westmorland and Furness Highways have been notified and will be sending out a team to fix the signage.

We are also aware other safety signage has been removed in Clifton over the weekend.

Tampering with highways signage is an offence under the highways act and Clifton Community Council will be working with Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumbria Police to address this ongoing issue in our community.

Due to the forecast for today and recent heavy rain the difficult decision to postpone todays bring and share picnic has been taken.
We will look to rearrange the event when the weather improves over the next couple of weeks 🤞

Clifton Community Council are exploring the opportunities to deliver mobile connectivity improvements working with UK network providers to utilise the councils existing street lighting infrastructure to host small shoe box sized units that would provide significant local improvement for 4G and 5G mobile connectivity.

Clifton Community Council previously worked to bring the fibre connectivity to Clifton and is working to see the remaining rural parts of the parish connected with fibre it’s hoped later this year.
However mobile connectivity issues is an issue that has been raised by some members of the community they would like to see improved with some finding the mobile signal has got worse over the last year locally impacting the ability to use mobile services locally.

This has been raised with network providers and Ofcom but Clifton Community Council is looking to the opportunity to bring significant local mobile signal improvement for the community and help to make the streetlight more cost sustain able long term for Clifton as energy costs and other maintenance costs increase the opportunity to use the lighting assets to generate a revenue to cover some of the operating costs will allow the council to continue to provide street lighting when other areas are dimming or turning lights off to reduce costs.

As part of exploring the opportunity and understanding the wider mobile connectivity issues we would like to hear from members of the community visitors and local business of any issues or views on the mobile connectivity in the local area and thoughts on the use of streetlights to improves mobile connectivity in the community.

Road Works on A6

United Utilities are carrying out emergency repairs to address a water leak along the A6 at the junction with Clifton Hill Gardens.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the works expected to take approximately 3 days to complete.
The works will take place on the pavement with a safe route for pedestrians maintained during the works.

Westmorland and Furness Highways are sending out a team to fix the signage that has been tampered with at the North end of Clifton

Cumbria Police have also been informed in connection with the tampering with road safety signage.

Westmorland and Furness Contractors will collect ALL blue bags through Clifton by the end of today the council has confirmed as some have again been missed.

Clifton Community Council also now has a box of replacement blue bags for anyone missing bags following collection.

You can contact Clifton Community Council or the council Chair Cllr Davies and we will get some bags to you.

Westmorland and Furness Council have had a conversation with the contractors over the situation of missed collections and replacement bags and it’s hoped the recent issues will resolve going forward until the new wheelie bins are in use for general waste.

We are aware of some missed blue bags waste collections in Clifton this week
This has been raised with Westmorland and Furness waste contracts team to try and get the missed household waste collected and missed public bins.

Once we have an update on this we will let everyone know the arrangements for collection..

Clifton Polling Place Changes Appeal Successful.

Last February Westmorland and Furness Council made changes to the voting place arrangements for Clifton that resulted in residents in the Clifton Polling district having to travel outside the polling district to vote.

The impacts of this change was seen straight away in the low turnout of Clifton residents to vote in the by election held in February 2026.

Clifton Community Council as one of the only bodies eligible to appeal the changes made by Westmorland and Furness Council lodged an appeal with the Electoral Commission on the grounds Westmoreland and Furness Council had not followed the required electoral requirements over polling places inside polling districts and the impact this change has on easy access to vote for residents in the community.

The Electoral Commission has today written to Westmorland and Furness Council and Clifton Community Council to inform both councils that the electoral commission has upheld the appeal and requires within two months Westmorland and Furness Council to designate a new polling place in the Clifton Polling district for use in future elections.

As part of the year long case the commission has carried out visits to Clifton and listened to representation made by Clifton Community Council, Westmoreland and Furness Council and others before determining the appeal decision announced today.

Clifton Community Council thank the electoral commission for their work and diligence on this appeal one of only 2 such successful appeals in the last six years across England and Wales.

M6 Southbound Closure on TUESDAY 27TH JANUARY 10PM-6AM

National Highways have informed us that the southbound carriageway of the M6 is breaking up through the Clifton / Lowther Bridge roadworks.

They have been filling the potholes under rolling blocks, but with the recent cold/wet weather cannot keep on top of it and machine patching is required.

They have secured resource to carry out the works on Tuesday night next week, and will be closing the M6 overnight and using the A6 diversion route, to facilitate this .
The closure will be between 10pm and 6am as usual, and they will deploy the speed warning signs as agreed.

With such short notice we they will however be unable to secure the speed camera van on this occasion.

INational Highways have said they understand this is less than ideal coming of the back of the rail closures, but they have no option but to carry out the works to keep the carriageway safe.
