A busy weekend for GSPC - firstly the annual Otteriggs Midsummer Picnic at midday on Saturday 20th followed by our rescheduled Balsam Bash at the Fishing Grounds on Sunday afternoon 1-4 pm. Sign up to the ERT to register as a volunteer.

Is there anything in Great Salkeld parish that could be registered as a local asset?

Do you know of a hidden or overlooked heritage gem which should be protected for future generations?
Residents are being urged to help ensure these heritage assets' value is recognised
They could be anything from a piece of street furniture to a house designed by a local architect or lived in by someone noteworthy; an old pub or barn; a park or garden; a statue or carving; or a site with importance for agriculture, commerce or industry.
Westmorland and Furness Council has a list of non-designated assets already nominated by members of the public and wants to expand this list by inviting more nominations.
Just one example on the present Local Heritage List is this concrete sheep dip dated 1929 and a stone sheepfold on Crackenthorpe village green.
Local Listing is different to the National Heritage List for England that includes Scheduled Monuments and Listed Buildings. Being included on the Local List does not provide any extra planning controls to the assets but makes the heritage asset a non-material planning consideration. They enable the significance of any building or site on the list to be better taken into account in planning applications affecting the building or site or its setting.

All are welcome, no experience necessary and no equipment needed. Join us for a rewarding, fun and invigorating way to spend your day! And by pulling out invasive, non-native Himalayan balsam, you’ll be helping to protect our rivers and native wild plants. It’s easy, fun and a good workout! Sign up via our website.

Garden waste subscriptions are open 🌿

If you live in Westmorland and Furness and wish to continue receiving garden waste collections - or would like to begin using the service - you’ll need to sign up and subscribe at a cost of £60 per bin, per year.

The quickest and easiest way to do this is online at: https://www.westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/gardenwaste, where you can also find more information.

You can also subscribe by telephone, on 0300 373 3300.

Those signing up for the first time will receive their first garden waste bin free of charge. Additional bins can be purchased for a one-off fee of £25 each, and every bin - including the first - will need a subscription.

Once you've signed up, a sticker will be posted to you to place on your bin. Any additional bins ordered will be delivered after sign up is complete.

From 29 June onwards, only bins with a valid sticker will be collected.

This doesn't affect general household waste or recycling collections.
