Emergency services are currently responding to a serious road traffic collision on the A66 near Penrith.

The collision was reported to police at 6:17pm today and occurred on the westbound carriageway near Highgate Farm.

The A66 has been closed in both directions between Rheged and Keswick.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Police were called to the report of a two-vehicle collision on the A6 between Low Hesket and High Hesket at 12:42pm on the 16 October 2026.

The collision involved an Audi and a Hyundai.

The driver in the Hyundai, a man in his 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The passenger of the Hyundai, a woman in her 70s, remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of the collision.

Any witnesses to the collision or anyone who has dashcam footage is asked to contact officers on 101, referring to incident 89 of 16 October or email [email protected]

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service responded at 8.25pm yesterday (19 October) following a call made to North West Fire Control to a fire involving a garage and outbuildings at a domestic property on Front Street, Orton.

Three fire engines attended from Shap, Appleby and Penrith fire stations, as well as a turntable ladder and support from Carlisle East.

Crews used breathing apparatus, a main jet, a hose reel, a ladder and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for about four hours.

Firefighters returned to the scene this morning to carry out some initial investigation work into the cause of the fire and check for any signs of reignition.

No injuries have been reported from the incident.

Cumbria Police also attended the incident to support by closing the road during the response, which has since reopened.
