Shortly before 17:00 on Saturday afternoon when returning from another incident the crew were alerted to a fire in a wooded area at the end of Haweswater reservoir. The incident caller was contacted and informed us that a group of youths possibly camping in the area were gathering wood and burning it. On arrival there were no signs of smoke but crew members filled scotty backpacks with water to take with them on their trek to search for the fire. The crew came across Area wardens whilst walking and were informed that the youths in question had been asked to leave and a camp fire had been extinguished. The crew continued to check the area and once again speak to people illegally camping and educated them on the dangers these irresponsible actions could cause to the area.

It was evident to see that many more camp fires had been burning at different times recently, as well as the use of barbecue’s. Wardens regularly check the area for people camping and lighting fires. They can and have imposed fines on people carrying out such activities. As a service we urge people not to use naked flames, light camp fires or use barbecues whilst enjoying our upland areas. Especially whilst we are experiencing lengthy periods of hot and dry weather. Please always take away what you bring with you also. Access to upland areas throughout Cumbria can be very difficult and any kind of fire that gets out of control has the potential to use up significant numbers of resources for prolonged periods making it more difficult for us to attend other incidents which may be life threatening.

This evening, crews from Shap, Sedbergh, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen pulled together in what would be a farewell exercise with our Station Manager Pete Kavanagh. An SM who’s always strived to do the best for his stations and support the crews in every way possible. We’ll be forever grateful for the time he’s put into supporting the stations. Some good laughs along the way which at times in this job you really need. We know how hard this will be for him after so many years of dedicated service not only in his current role as SM but also as a valued member of the On Call crew at Penrith. We wish him well in his future endeavours.

Tonight we were also grateful for the attendance of members of the North West Ambulance Service to take part in our RTC exercise. The scenario saw a multiple vehicle RTC with a number of casualties involved. Injuries varying from impalement from a tree branch, crush injuries and catastrophic bleeding to an upper limb trapped beneath a vehicle, to spinal injuries to a casualty still suspended by their seat belt. Crews triaged casualties to prioritise those in most need before further resources arrived then liaised with the ambulance crews and other appliances to formulate a plan and put a command structure in place, sectorising vehicles so crews could bring the exercise to a successful conclusion. Excellent work from all involved. Big thanks to FF Iveson for supplying the de polluted vehicles and Amy Wood and family for providing the brews during the debrief 💥🚗 🚑 🚒👨🏻‍🚒 ☕️🍪👍🏻

Unfortunately a team photo got missed as 2 of the crews got mobilised to a large vehicle fire just as we finished 🤦‍♂️.

Tonight Station Manager Pete Kavanagh had the privilege of presenting Watch Manager Jonny Wood from Shap Fire Station with his 20 Year Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, alongside his proud wife Amy, and daughters, Thomasina and Isabella, who were also thanked for supporting Jonny in his role .

Jonny's dedication, passion, and commitment to serving his community are an inspiration, and he leads the outstanding crew at Shap Fire Station from the front every day.

During the presentation Pete said "Jonny embodies everything the fire and rescue service stands for. His commitment to protecting others and supporting his team makes him a credit to the Service and a role model for those around him."

Congratulations on a thoroughly deserved award and thank you for 20 years of exceptional service 🚒🏅

At 6.30 on Saturday morning the Shap crew were mobilised to a chimney fire in the station area. On route Control informed them that an extra resource had been mobilised as the fire was spreading into the property. Once in attendance the crew quickly discovered a lintel above the fireplace was well alight and beginning to spread along exposed beams in the ceiling. The crew worked quickly to extinguish the fire and cut back and remove any burnt timber from the property avoiding any further spread.

A large buildup of soot sat on top of the register plate round the flue had lead to a breach in the liner. The homeowner hadn't been living in the property long and was unaware of the standard of work that had been previously carried out. We urge people to ensure a well recognised sweep and builder assist in a full check of any wood burners/fireplaces and the integrity of flue liners above the register plate before moving into a new property.

It is believed this fire could have been burning for a considerable length of time due to the smoke disappearing up the chimney but thankfully the homeowner was able to raise the alarm and evacuate the property.

Huge thanks to the heroes from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service for coming out to help our RSPB Conservation Grazing team yesterday.

One of our cows had got stuck in a wet corner of a field and we’re so grateful for the muscle-power of the fire service to help pull her out on a .
