The 2026 Cornish Sardine Festival is well underway after the event at Newlyn Harbour was officially opened earlier today by Mayor Andy Law.
The aroma of freshly grilled sardines wafting through the sea air is enticing a hungry crowd to the harbour, with free tasters and even sardine pizza on offer!
But as well as the culinary delights, there is also live music throughout the day, boat trips, the RNLI Penlee Lifeboat open day, art workshops, and a chance to get onboard a traditional fishing lugger with The Cornish Maritime Trust.
The event is running on Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 August, and is free to attend.

Tomorrow at midday, Mayor of Penzance Andy Law will officially open the 2026 Cornish Sardine Festival in Newlyn Harbour!
Taking place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 August, the event is a celebration of the Cornish sardine, the fishermen who catch them, and the rich maritime heritage of Newlyn.
Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to meet the skippers and crews behind the catch, watch talented local artists, and see the historic luggers that fished these waters over 100 years ago.
Also taking place in Newlyn Harbour over the Bank Holiday weekend, Penlee Lifeboat are holding their Open Days. From 12:00, visitors can board and look around the all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat Ivan Ellen and see the B class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Mollie and Ivor Dent. RNLI volunteers will be on hand to show people around the boats and answer questions about the station and its lifeboats.
The RNLI lifeboat station at Newlyn will be open for both days and the slipway building at Penlee Point near Mousehole will be open on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August. The Penlee Point building was the home of the Solomon Browne and her crew, and is now a Grade 2 listed building.

Some exciting news for Penzance!
Cornish-born Michelin-starred chef Tom Brown has joined forces with the Penzance Regeneration Company and Truro & Penwith College to create AG Brown, a new training restaurant inside Penzance’s historic Market House.
Opening in summer 2027, the venture will give students experience in a top class restaurant environment while creating new opportunities for young people in West Cornwall.
Alongside the restaurant, the Market House will be home to a new street food hall with three kitchen spaces created for growing local food businesses.
To whet your appetite, Tom Brown will be at the Penzance Food Festival on Sunday 6 September in Penlee Park for a live chef demo.
