🛟 SENNEN COVE LIFEBOAT DAY 🛟

Last Sunday saw some of our team members go ‘down the Cove’ to support our close working relationship with the crews of the Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station!

As our nearest RNLI Lifeboat station (the next being round the corners north and south at either Penlee Lifeboat or St Ives Lifeboat) we frequently work with the crew on a variety of tasks throughout the year.

They assist us (and we assist them!) with things such as searches, access, casualty care and evacuation, and a very handy radio-relay, to speak to the Operations Room at Falmouth Coastguard when we’re in a spot with a drop in radio reception!

Supporting their open days like this is also a chance for us to meet the public and help deliver safety messages and advice for keeping safe along our beautiful Cornish coastline.

📍 Porthchapel

We were tasked to locate and asses a person who had slipped on the coast path leading down to Porthchapel from the Minack Theatre area, and injured their knee.

Once we arrived at an access point, we made our way to the casualty who was just down from the outcrop of rocks at the top of the path to the beach.

We carried out an initial assessment, during which time other team members had now moved the vehicle to a closer, more suitable location given the casualty’s actual position. A South Western Ambulance ambulance was also called.

We supported the suspected knee-cap injury, and transferred the casualty to a stretcher, before carrying them to the field adjacent to the car park to meet the ambulance. A Community First Responder also arrived.

Once the paramedic had given them the once-over, they were taken onwards to the next level of care.

We were stood down to return to station and repack our kit ready for the next tasking.

We were tasked to reports of a person in the water at the beach. After liaising with other agencies, and having found nobody in or around the water, we were stood down to return to station.

📍 Pedn Men Du, Sennen

We were tasked to a fallen climber, who had fallen approximately 30 feet before being arrested by their safety rope.

On arrival, Sennen Cove Lifeboat Station had already put two crew ashore at the bottom of the cliff to carry out an initial assessment. Whilst that continued, and with Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team on scene too, technical equipment was set up to carry out a rope rescue from above if required. Team members were also sent down with South Western Ambulance Paramedics to carry out a further examination of the casualty.

After a thorough assessment and some treatment for head and shoulder injuries, the decision was made that the casualty could be helped to walk back to the cliff top, under the supervision of paramedics.

Once the casualty was at the top of the cliff area, they were taken to the next level of care. Teams departed the scene shortly after.

📍 Portheras Cove

We were tasked to assist Penzance CRT with a casualty who had a potential spinal injury.

When we arrived on scene, Penzance CRT were already with the young casualty, along with a First Responder and paramedics. The Coastguard helicopter ‘Rescue 924’ had also just arrived on scene and was making an approach to the beach to offload the winch paramedic. Some of our team made their way down to the beach to assist with recovering equipment, and to ensure members of the public stayed back while the aircraft landed again to retrieve the casualty and paramedics.

They repositioned the helicopter to a field adjacent to the waiting ambulance, where we had set up an HLS, and then transferred the casualty to allow them to leave for onward care.

After a short debrief, we departed to return to the station.

📍Pordennack Point, Lands End.

We were tasked to assist an unwell person on the path between Greeb Farm and Pordennack Point.

We located the casualty, assisted them to the The Land's End Hotel, which kindly let us use a quiet room while we waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Once the South Western Ambulance ambulance arrived, we completed a thorough handover with the paramedics and shortly after, departed from the scene.

📍St Loy

We were tasked to assist South Western Ambulance to a person who had fallen off the small footbridge in St Loy and sustained a serious knee injury. Due to the reported location not being exact, Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked incase the job required any technical rescue that required two teams.

Once on scene we assisted the paramedics, who had already completed their assessment and bandaged the wound, in moving the casualty out of the stream onto the bank, and into our stretcher.

We carried them to the ambulance where they were taken by the paramedics for further treatment.

We were tasked to reports of a dog that had fallen over the cliff at Nanjizal, and that the dog’s owner had climbed down after them. Once the family lost sight, they called for assistance and raised the alarm.

With both Sennen Cove lifeboats on the way too, and given the location of the dog and owner we stood by at the top of the cliffs incase we were required to assist.

The All-Weather Lifeboat stood slightly offshore to provide a communication relay for both their Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) and for our Coastguard team. Their ILB then proceeded in to assess the dog and owner, retrieve them, and take them back to Sennen Cove to meet the rest of the family.

We were tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to reports of potential ordnance found near Pordenack, just past Greeb Farm at Lands End.

On arrival, the team quickly established a cordon and stopped people continuing along that stretch of coast path. Whilst this happened, EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) had been contacted and were asked to attend, along with Devon and Cornwall Police.

Once EOD had arrived, they inspected and carried out a controlled detonation of the object to destroy it.

As Coastguard Rescue Officers, we are trained to deal with situations like this to ensure any suspected objects aren’t accidentally triggered with people nearby.

💥 If you ever come across a suspicious object on the coast:

❌ DO NOT TOUCH IT
❌ DO NOT MOVE IT
❌ DO NOT TAKE IT AWAY

☎️ Move to a safe distance and call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

We were tasked to assist the RNLI RNLI Penwith Lifeguards on the beach with a casualty who was unwell.

On arrival the Lifeguards briefed us on their position and condition. We reached the casualty and carried out a full assessment, before deciding it was best to stretcher the casualty to the lifeguard hut and out of the elements to continue monitoring their condition.

Once the casualty was on the way to further care, we were stood down to return to station.
