This is the result of the campfire from the previous post.

This shows the nature of these sort of fires and how difficult they are to extinguish. One bit of smouldering soil and a change of wind direction and speed and the end result is 3 days later we have 5+ acres of wildfire in an extremely difficult spot to access and multiple fire crew and pumps (Fire engines) on scene.

Please don’t light bonfires/campfires during this exceptionally dry period.

Today we dealt with this fire that started from what many people think is a safer way to have a campfire in a ring of stones.

However the video shows just how these fires spread often even after they seem to have been extinguished. The soil in this wooded area near Mousehole is very peaty so the fire burned down into the soil and then tracked out around it and spread after whoever had lit it had left.

If the smoke wasn’t spotted by a walker this would have spread into the nearby woodland and would likely have caused a very large fire. It was tricky to deal with as it was at the end of a remote very steep path which meant getting water to it was a problem hence the use of the water backpack.

Help prevent wildfires. Ensure you are aware of and follow any advice or restrictions that apply to areas you are visiting.

Wildfires Public Safety Advice:
Avoid using disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks, and moorland areas.
Do not discard ci******es, matches, or glass bottles, as they can ignite dry vegetation.
Follow local authority guidance on fire risks and restrictions.
Report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and asking for the Fire and Rescue Service.
If you notice any suspicious behaviour or see someone intentionally starting a fire, contact the Police on 101 or report the information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
If there is a fire, call 999 immediately.
