But make sure you don't get caught offside when it comes to your recycling.

All those extra drinks cans, bottles and takeaway containers can be given a new lease of life if you make the right call after the final whistle.

We are challenging a government-imposed planning sanction that could see decisions on major development taken nationally rather than by your locally elected councillors.

The Government has decided to designate us under Section 62A of the Town and Country Planning Act because, over a two-year period from 2023 to 2025, 10.7% of major planning applications refused by the council were later allowed on appeal. This is marginally above the Government's 10% threshold.

Designation means developers submitting certain major planning applications can choose to bypass the council and instead apply directly to the Planning Inspectorate, which would decide those applications on our behalf.

We strongly dispute the decision. It ignores evidence we provided demonstrating the significant improvements made to our planning service over the last two years, including reducing successful appeals to around half the Government's designation threshold and being recognised as the RTPI West Midlands Planning Team of the Year.

Cllr Emma Kearsey, our Executive Board Member for Planning, Infrastructure and Urban Design, said:
"How dare they! This is an outrageous decision by a Government that thinks it can simply dictate to local communities in complete defiance of the evidence and common sense.

"We have no problem with accountability. We do have an issue with a decision based on historic data that ignores the reality of the planning service we have today.

"We will challenge this affront to local democracy and fight to return decisions on major planning applications to democratically elected councillors as soon as possible."

Foil in love with recycling! You can now put aluminium foil trays and tubes in your green bin and it will be recycled. Just save up your foil trays and wrap, scrunch it into a big ball and throw it in your green recycling bin.

Aluminium can be recycled infinitely and by recycling you are conserving natural resources and energy used in the production of new products. Within weeks your aluminium foil tray could be back on the shelves with a drink in it!

🚨 Coming next week - Have your say on key transport infrastructure for Wychavon Town.

We're seeking views on proposals for the roads, walking and cycling routes, rail crossings and public transport links needed to support the proposed 10,000-home town around Worcestershire Parkway.

Consultation opens on Monday 22 June and will be available at https://bit.ly/4pwCmKD until 10 July.

Newt detectives were out at Avon Meadows last week… and yes, it’s exactly as fun as it sounds! 🕵️‍♂️💧
Our Wildlife Sites and Biodiversity Officer, Karen Rose, teamed up with Pete Cass from the Freshwater Habitats Trust to do some high‑tech “pond sleuthing”. Every May for the past ten years, the Trust has tested the ponds and ditches here for tiny traces of Great Crested Newt DNA, a species that’s now very rare and needs all the help it can get. 🦎💙

We’ve never found any Great Crested Newt DNA at Avon Meadows (yet!), but that’s actually really important. Knowing where they aren’t helps scientists understand where they are, how they move between wetlands, and what they need to survive and thrive. Sometimes a “no newts today” result is just as valuable as a “yes”! 🌿🔬

Great Crested Newts often get a bit of a bad reputation in the planning world, but protecting them also protects a whole network of other species. And when they do turn up, it’s usually a sign of a healthy, balanced ecosystem worth looking after. 💚

So here’s to pond‑dipping with purpose, a decade of data, and the brilliant people helping us understand these amazing little amphibians.

‼️IMPORTANT‼️ A mature lime tree in Crown Meadow will be felled soon 🌿 after inspections confirmed it is in severe decline and now poses a safety risk. The tree has shown very limited leaf growth this year 🍃, and there is fungal activity at the base, which often indicates internal decay.

Because it sits close to a busy footpath 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ we need to remove it to keep people safe.
The felling date is still to be confirmed, and the area will be safely cordoned off while the work takes place ⚠️

A new tree will be planted at Crown Meadow this winter 🌱 to maintain the site's character.

📢 Consultations have opened on two key planning documents that will help shape future development in Crowle parish and Droitwich Spa.

Both areas have produced Neighbourhood Plans which the public can have their say on over the next six weeks.

Neighbourhood Plans allow communities to influence where development should go, what it should look like and which local issues matter most to residents. Once adopted, they become part of the wider development plan used to help determine planning applications in the area. They can also help planners secure developer contributions to support the creation of new community facilities.
