Craigend Interchange on the M90 near Perth

🛣️ A challenging piece of Scottish road engineering! 🚧

This fantastic archive photo shows Craigend Interchange on the M90 near Perth, under construction.

Designed by Babtie, Shaw & Morton and built by Whatlings, the interchange was a particularly challenging project — and one that took some serious engineering skill to bring to life! 👷‍♂️

It finally opened to traffic in October 1977, becoming an important part of the motorway.

📸 Nearly 50 years on, this image gives us a brilliant glimpse of the work that went into creating Scotland’s motorway network.

Postcard of the Day: Kildrummie Station (Ian Maclaren), around 1907. Reids Mothven Series.

This is actually Methven Station, around 1907. When the railway was extended to Crieff, the extension diverged about a mile short of Methven, which was left as the terminus of a short branch line. The postcard is captioned 'Kildrummie', the fictional name Methven adopts in author Ian Maclaren's fiction.

These archaeological excavations at 75 High Street, Perth - now Marks and Spencer - were photographed sometime between 1975 and 1977. At the time, they were some of the largest urban medieval excavations ever carried out in Scotland.

Interested in Perthshire's rich mapping history?

Friends of Perth and Kinross Archive are hosting a fascinating talk at the AK Bell Library by map historian John Moore.

Using historic estate maps from Perthshire and Kinross created before the Ordnance Survey, John will explore how our local landscape was recorded and mapped, and the challenges of uncovering and preserving these important historical records.

With more than 40 years of experience researching the history of maps in Scotland, John brings a wealth of knowledge to this engaging talk.

The talk takes place at 6.30pm on Thursday 17 September at the AK Bell Library. Please enter via the Soutar Theatre entrance on the west side of the library.

Tickets cost £6 full price and £3.50 for concessions, and are free for members of the Friends of Perth & Kinross Archive.
